First, Canon A40 can make snapshots immediately transferred via USB directly to Windows using Canon Remote Capture utility (without storing on compact flash card).

Second, A40 can make movies and store it on compact flash as AVI files.

My question is: can I immediately transfer a currently performed movie snap from camera to Windows (or Linux) in live mode, a'la WebCam? I.e., does Canon A40 support that? Which utility I need under Windows for that?

No. You may want to do a search on here. There have been MANY similar threads, and it seems that the consensus is to simply buy a webcam instead of using the PowerShot.

I can't understand why anyone would want to use their $300+ digital camera as a webcam rather than buying a cheap webcam designed for that purpose. Sure it's cool to try it, but is it worth the wear and tear?
