Hi all. I'm trying to start doing some macro work. I've experimented with reversing lenses on each other, and attempting to get something close to macro with the kit lense. It's been fun trying to get into it but I need to take a step up and get myself a real lense for the job.

I've had my eye on the Canon 100mm Macro for awhile and up until a little while ago I knew that was going to be my next lens as soon as I had the cash. But recently I've been thinkng of upgrading my telephoto aswell. I currently have the almighty (not!) Canon 75-300mm 3.5-5.6, my upgrade would probably be to the Canon 70-200mm F4L and then be accompanied by the Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma) or Tamron 200-500mm later on.

I was wondering, after seeing some pictures in the macro section, would the quality of the Canon 70-200mm F4L with Close up filters be comparible to that of the 100mm macro? And what stregth of Close up filter would you need to get to 1:1 (True Macro)?

Thanks for any help in advance,
Johnsoir

Extension tubes would be better.

edit, I just saw some nice shots with closeup on 70-200 in the macro section, so I haven't a clue.

Nothing compares to a true macro lens when it comes to supreme IQ and convenience. However, start with some ext. tubes. You'll need them even after you get your macro lens. Much better than close-up lenses.

Can I use ext. tubes with the 100mm macro.

Will this affect IQ?

Would like to get even closer :) image wise.

Yes, you can use ext.tubes with any macro lens for more "power." Very little effect on IQ.
