So I've asked this question on forums before when looking to recommend cameras for different people, but the responses were spread out all over the board.

My brother had a DSLR (Canon Rebel XT) but found it too bulky to carry around in his backpack for simple everyday photos (and videos). He used to have a Canon SD 450 that he liked and is now looking to get a new camera.

What do you recommend? Budget is no more than $300.

In the past some people have recommended the Canon S3 IS and the Canon SD 870 IS.

Also, if you could also mention why you like (or are promoting) the camera, that would be very helpful in making a decision.

Canon G9. It is compact, robust, hi specs, great quality fotos plus you can shoot in RAW.

OP has a budget of no more than 300
first you gotta let us know what you're looking for, because an SD870 IS while nice, wont be able to offer you what say a DSLR would in terms of more advanced features such as Aperture/Shutter priorities.

Well, the camera is for my brother...but here goes.

Good image quality.
Fast response time (some p&s have ridiculous lag).
Manual control isn't as much of an issue (aperature/shutter priority isn't a requirement...but maybe just the option to do a long shutter)
Image stabilization would be nice.
Movie mode.

And design perks (cosmetic, large lcd, etc) would be good too.

Take a look at the A650 IS. You can get it at BuyDig.com for about $290

Swivel 2.5" LCD, 12MP, uses 4AA batteries and has the same sensor as the G9.

the 870 IS should be awesome then
doesn't have manual features, but its stylish, has IS, and image quality is good. I like canon point and shoots the best
