Just got back from a basement fire in a neighboring town. I drove a truck so I was limited on photos. I had to stay with the apparatus. No injuries reported, fire held to the basement.

No flash, all shot with 30D + 70-200 2.8 IS at f2.8, 1600 ISO, and various shutter speeds.

6. I love the lighting at fire scenes. It's like a studio with gels haha.

Hey Jaws I have a question. You have some nice photog gear. How do you happen to have it handy on your responses? Do you keep it in your gear locker so its ready? Do you keep it on the rig? Do you worry about theft?

At my station, I have a gear locker but my photog gear will not fit in the little lockable cubby. When the tones drop by the time I get my turnout gear and jump on the rig, I have no time to run to the car, etc. to grab the camera - which is obviously not what is on my mind at that time anyway. I guess it does not matter because I would not be able to shoot much action when I'm in the back (I am not a driver....yet).

Still, I would like to have my photog gear ready but have not figured out a plan. I was thinking of a 'gun locker' setup at my gear rack under my boots which would allow a quick press of some buttons to grab the camera. I would keep my second body and street zoom in it for times when I could grab a shot.

Nice pix by the way....

1080iAddict- Thanks for the comment.

"Every good photographer has his or her gear on them at all times."
Just kidding, I understand haha. I usually always have my gear with me and the firehouse is no exception. We have gear grid lockers at our station which are fully open with no closing door. I usually keep my gear in my bag on top of my boots or in the lounge with me if I'm at the station. When I'm coming from home I just lug it with me into the station. Pain in the rear end I know to bring that big bag everywhere but, it's the only way.

Like I told my Battalion Chief last night, "Either my bag goes on the truck or I don't." I'm a photographer for the local paper, so either I go to the fire and drive truck complete my duty then take photos. Or I go as a photographer and the truck is driverless. Their choice lol.
