I have had this flash for about 6 months and have only used it in ETTL mode. Today I was out with my daughter taking some pics for fun. She was in the shadow with bright backinghting. I wanted a shallow depth of field so I set apiture to 2.8 and set the flash to 1/16 in manual mode for fill flash, when I tried to set the shutter speed it wouldnt let me set it faster than 1/200th. Am I doing something wrong?

I think I figured it out, ETTL for shutter speeds up to and including 1/200. ETTL with High Speed Sync for anything above 1/200th of a second. Can someone reassure me that Im correct?

I believe the Drebel cannot do a high speed sync faster than 1/200th. And they only improved that to 1/250th in the D20.

The maximum sync speed for the camera is 1/200 sec. Any faster then that and the shutter will not be completely open and only a part of the image will get flash exposure. To use a faster shutter speed, you need to use high speed sync, which causes your flash to fire lower power pulses of light. This has the effect of the flash rather then the shutter controlling the exposure time, so it can't be used for fast moving objects.

High speed sync is for speeds faster than the maximum sync speed to 1/200th on the rebel.
