Hi guys, im pretty new here and have been impressed with all the knowledge flipping around, so I was hoping to get some CC and advice on some photos I took a few weeks ago at a Snowboard World Cup event I went to.

The first part I went to was during the afternoon with a partly cloudy but bright sky, and then the finals were at night under the lights. Thats where I really struggled.
I was shooting with a Sigma 70-300 Sigma nothing super fancy but still think I can get more out of it then what I did this day for the most part.

So I was just curious what you guys the experts think of how I can make it things better.

These are Un-photoshopped at this point because I really just wanted to see what you thought of my work with the camera not my editing.

The first photo was shot with a really fast shutter (probably too fast but the 3 best ones I got from the day were all fast like that)
1/1250
F- 5.6
all the way out @ 300mm focal length
200 ISO

2nd
1/400
f- 5
@ 190mm
1600 ISO

So after looking at this photo, what should I be using @ night like this? I really struggled trying to get the rider in the lights and clear.

Here is the gallery of a bunch of shots from the day if you are curious or have the time it'd be great if you took a peak. http://picasaweb.google.com/r.hopping/NokiaSnowboardWorldCupInCalgary

Thanks!!

Look pretty good to me. I'm not sure how the Sigma 70-300 performs as I was lucky enough to pick up a 70-200 shortly after I got my XTi. From what I've heard of other 70-300's I'd say these are pretty good. The day one I think is actually a little off for my taste, maybe try to "lead" the boarder a little and get more of a sense of where he's going, not where he's been. Try to shoot the lower pipe where he'll land I guess.

The night one is pretty good, I don't think the lighting is all that bad, just maybe try to get a bit of the pipe in the shot. But as always, you are limited as to where you can stand at comps so this may have been your only option.
