View Full Version : Fix Jumpy Rebel Stock Lens 18-55?

I figure that either it's just my lens, or I'm not using the right search terms  but....

Does anyone else have an issue with the zoom movement on the stock Rebel lens where it's a bit jumpy rather than smooth all the way through?

It's almost like I need to apply just a bit too much pressure to get it to move; then when it does, it has moved just a bit too far. Not so much in the middle of the lens' range; but more at each end of its limit.

Any suggestions on smoothing it out?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you can do ... maybe hose it down with some WD-40?

Seriously, if it's really bad you may want to consider returning it. The kit lens is of mediocre - at best - build quality. Mine is not exactly silky, but it doesn't require an inordinate amount of force to zoom.

$100 lens, what else can you expect?

Which has nothing to do with this problem since more expensive lens have had this problem also.

It has everything to do with it!

Cheap lens = cheap parts = crap lens = jumpy zoom ring

Take the lense back. My PIECE OF CRAP $100 18-55mm kit lense works smoothly from 18-55 and does what it is supose to do regaurdless of price. If you buy a VCR from Wal*Mart for $35 and you get home and it eats every tape you put in it do you say "Well thats what I get for $35 or do you take it back and get one that works or your money back?

I've never the problem you describe with my lens. It zooms smooth and easy...

Either change it, or I am misunderstanding something. :?

Pretty much what I figured......

It's not unbearable; just annoying, and perhaps well within spec for the build.

Thanks for the comments!

Now....where did I put that WD-40?

They make a subtle noise when zooming but the action itself should have no hard spots

Had the same problem at first and also with my 28/135

A few dozen different scenes and they both worked their way to smoother operation. Kinda takes a while for them to wear off a rough spot or two.

If it isn't optically a problem - keep it a while.

This may be a totally stupid response which, in essence, patronizes the reader, but... i digress:

on the lens there is a switch AF/MF and by stock is selected on AF (Auto Focus). if you switch this to MF (Manual Focus) it smoothes things out quite a bit. I found my digital rebel's included lens was doing the same thing until it all the sudden came to me that there is a switch there for a purpose! "Duh," i said to myself.

Hope that helps!
