I'm looking for something wider than my 28-75. I don't want to pay the Canon L price, because this is not a lens that I will use that often. Any opinions on the Tamrons or other?
thanks,
daniel

How much wider?
I cant think of any really cheap lenses under 28mm but there are some cheaper ones
20mm f/1.8 sigma is only a few hundred
the 17-40 is an L, but it's not like most L's in that is only $680...so i'm not real sure what your budget it, nor how wide you want...

Drisley just got this 17mm Tokina that looks really good for <$400. He posted a bunch of test shots too, check out the thread.

Well, I was thinking around 17mm and under $500 if possible. I typically don't shoot with anything wider than 28 and have never had a real interest in it so I'm not real familiar with whats available. I won't use it real often, but I will use it for paid portraits now and then, so it has to be descent.

Thanks Phil.
Yes, I was in the exact same boat as you dsze.
I wanted something wide to replace the 18-50mm kit lens I lost when I sold the 300D.
I don't use wide angle often, so I wanted to save money but still wanted decent quality.
After MUCH research, I bought the Tokina 17mm F3.5 ATX PRO.
I have to say it's worth every penny. It's only $365 at Adorama.
It's built like a tank, 3 yr warranty, sharp as a 17-40L, very little distortion, excellent flare control, comes with a cool leather case.
What more could you ask for, besides zoom?
This lens is much sharper than the 18-50mm kit lens. They are not even in the same league optically or in any other way.
In fact I dont think there is any lens out there in this league (17mm, sharp, cheap, built like an L lens.)
Check out the link that pcasciola posted above, and also read this review (http://www.seittipaja.fi/data/Pontification/b_Photography/d_Tokina_AT-X_17mm/a_Tokina_AT-X_17_mm.html).

thanks everyone...I'll be looking very closely at the Tokina 17 in the next week. I'll let you all know what I decide.... Great photos BTW, drisley! They make me want to order the 17mm right now!
As for the rebel kit lens... been there. I'll pass on that one! :)

Thanks dsze.
All I can say is that the Tokina is an awesome option if you dont need zoom. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

I'm sold. I've just added this lense to my wish list. I need to stop browsing these forums, bad for my wallet.

I have a Tamron 19-35 lens that's pretty good.. Cost $300 or so IIRC. Was planning to sell it as I picked up a Canon 16-35L.

I can recommend a Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5 lens - it's quite wide on a 1.6 crop body. The optical quality is nice, the lens is big, but surprisingly not that heavy, very good build quality. You can get it for $479 here (http://www.deltainternational.com/store/Item_SGL15%2D30C.htm) (for some reason it's about $100 more expensive in B&H ...).
You can see a few samples from this lens here (http://www.pbase.com/olegis/streets_ta&page=all) and here (http://www.pbase.com/olegis/gay_parade__tel_aviv_2004&page=all).

Wow Olegis! Is that company legit?
That is an awesome price, and apparently a very good lens.
I like that focal range better than the 17-40L too.

Hey Drisley !
The Deltainternational.com store is no worse than B&H or Adorama, according to Resellerratings.com - see for yourself (http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1832.html). They have a few very nice offerings (Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro etc) that are much cheaper than in bigger stores like B&H.

You welcome
A month ago I wanted to buy the Tamron 90mm Macro from them, as it was about $100 cheaper than in B&H - but I ended up with the Canon 100mm Macro (mostly for extra reach, USM and the name), which I ordered from B&H, as it was selling for the same price just about everywhere.

Does anyone have a comparison (or know where I can find one) of what a 17mm frame looks like in comparison to a 28mm frame? I'm just wondering now if the 17 will infact be wide enough for the shot that I want it for. I feel kind of silly buying lens for about 5 shots, but there is a specific portrait shot that a client wants of a large group that I just can't get very well with my 28mm. Its an important shot to her, so I don't want to say, "sorry, I don't have a wide-enough lens."
thanks,
daniel

you can capture loads of people with a 17mm lens...
just in case these people don't want to be on the www - extra small

but hopefully they will line up a bit better...

Well, thanks everyone. I just ordered the Tokina 17 from Adorama. I found one on Ebay and got excited because it had a buy it now for $99! then I realized it was a manual focus old mount lens. Oh well... I got it from Adorama for $364.

congrats. there are other very nice lenses 19-35 mm range from third party brands -- Vivitar, Tamron, and Tokina all make very impressive super wide angle zooms for around $200 new or $100 on Ebay.

Yes, I will post some wedding shots when I get the lens. Thats really what I want the lens for at this point. Thanks for suggesting it! I'm excited to start playing with it! How is that 3.5 wide open though? Do you still find yourself wanting more light?
