Hair light - where can you put?

Is there a way to put a hair light right behind the neck of a subject to lighten up the hair in portrait pics? I tried to use boom arm or light stand but these things distracted the main subject. Putting the hair light aside or on top of the subject, the hair effect doesn't look so perfect as well.

Stick it on a light stand and have the subject block it?

You can use Grids or a Snoot, both will direct the light better to where you want.
