Ok, what is with canon naming.. it's just getting ridiculous.

And does anyone else feel like canon is crowding their SD lineup?

Canon's historically had three naming groups for "mass market" cameras; Japan, North America, and the rest of the world. And I've never seen any consistency among the three for any given model.

I think you'll find that the new models are replacing existing ones; there may be some overlap in availability as the pipeline clears of the old models, but the SD series will soon enough be back down to 6-7 models, all either at different price points or with distinctly unique features.

Yeah, I know they've always had different names. But in the early days, I remember you could almost derive where the camera was marketed and what it replaced. and there was some lose logic between the countries.. almost.. heh.

One time I sat down and made a table of model equivalents (which I really should locate, update and post) and there was a lot of seeming randomness even in the early models. But the model names Ixy, Ixus, Elph have been consistently regionalized.

The UK market's been very straight forward on naming I would say especially amongst the smaller bodied IXUS'

Anybody know why there is such a difference between the release dates of the SD890 and the European equivalent (IXUS 970)?

Amazon.com states that the SD890 is available for shipping on the 22nd May
Amazon.co.uk states that the IXUS 970 will already be shipping on the 27th March

There is a massive price difference (US < EU), and as someone who can easily obtain either model, I'd really appreciate knowing if the dates really are that far apart?

Seems to be the status quo for Canon, as the XSi has/had a March release date in Japan and a late April or early May release date for the US.

Hmm ok. I think I'll have to just take the hit then and pay what will end up being a good $200 more. The use I'll get in 2 months will be well worth it, and I've just sold my previous compact. I guess its a conscious sales strategy. People like me would rather get mugged for the extra money, rather than wait the 2 months and get it cheaper. Clever!

Thanks for the answer mate :)

Does anybody know of any hands-on reviews of the SD890 by any chance? I've read the press release too many times now - but I just can't find a review anywhere. I'd have thought that Canon would have sent a few out early to the usual suspects so they could review them?

The Elph's have been fine for a couple of years. I can't imagine getting anything newer with the same senor and more MP's.

I purchased a 770 IS for my wife and our soon to be new born in Nov.. I been shooting professional mx for years with Canon eos 1 series cameras.. I got this little gem and took it out with my dog for a walk and was just fooling around with it and I am blown away at the quality of the pictures.. I rarley use my markIIn for anything but work but have used it for some still shots of my bikes are cars ect.. This 770 has just as good of quality than my 10k set I use. Great features, I went with the 770 over the others for a smaller lcd screen to save battery life. I am pretty much shocked (is the word) of these point and shoot cameras , ive never owned one but now I see what all the hype of these little guys are all about.
