There have been a lot of telephoto lens questions recently so I thought it appropriate to include a couple of samples using my 75-300mm IS lens. Optically I believe it to be similar to the 75-300mm III lens.
This photo has only very minor sharpening applied in Elements and was very good "out of the box".

I have this lens. It's passable with a good hood and some touchup in post editing.

Your pics are a good example of a 75-300 lens at it's best-
And the good thing about the IS version is that it can be at it's best for a much larger percentage of shots, due to the image stability/ability to use small apertures most of the time
I'm very keen to try mine (it's at least a week away) against my supposedly optically better 100-300.The result will be very interesting :)

I've read at this forum and a few others that the IS 75-300 is actually softer than the none IS version.

Post the unsharpened photos. I would like to see raw data, not edited data. I played with this lens on Sunday and was somewhat impressed, but I still take my 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS even with the 2x or 1.4x Extender II's. I would like to see unedited images from the lens.

I would probably take a $1600 lens over a $390 lens myself.. apples/oranges.

I was surprised at the shot too and am quite happy with it. Here's a 100% crop of the original file. Just goes to show that the lens is quite capable of taking sharp pics in the right conditions.

What's wrong with edited photo's?I think you are worrying too much about this
ALL images can be sharpened-the difference is that pics from the best lenses can be sharpened far more without looking stupid.I have some pics from a cheap sigma 100-300 DL that look worse if any attempt is made at sharpening!
Of course when making direct comparisons between lenses one should allways say if any editing has been done

This phenomena is called pixel-peeping, I believe. 8)
