Hi there, I'm new to this forum and this is my first time posting a new topic. I currently own a Rebel XTi with Tamron 17-50mm lens. I recently purchased the Canon 430ex flash unit and have been experiencing trouble with exposure. My XTi's light meter currently underexposes by 2/3s of a stop which is common on most XTi's and I use exposure compensation. Though with the flash, shouldn't it expose properly with TTL or does it underexpose as well?

Using direct or bounce flash with 1/60 shutter, f/4.0 at 50mm with a mid-toned object about 5 feet away;the shot is always 1 stop underexposed. I would have to dial in FEC to compensate. I've tried this with and without the stofen diffuser and I get the same result. I am also using partial metering and tried using FEL with a midtoned subject also with the same result. I was just wondering if this is normal with the XTi and 430ex combo or if I possibly have a defective unit. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

common refrain: Set FEC +2/3EV or +1EV and you will be happy and not subject to chronic Canon ETTL underexposure (which is an unfortunate fact of life)

At first I thought direct ETTL flash with a 430EX looks so much crapper compared to On board flash, but then realised the Speedlites underexpose like crazy in low light
