Went to A huge Dog show at the Tradex in Abbotsford B.C. Very big event with handlers from all over North America. I shot about 145 photos. Some excellent shots too as these dogs are all posing. I get home after 5 hours of walking around talking to people and taking pictures, unload my cards only to find out I had the white balance set to daylight. Everything is yellow and whites are all blown. AAAAAAHHHHHH!

It wouldn't be a problem if you'd shot it all in RAW.

Only 3 images. I get there and figured I'd switch over to jpg as I wanted to make sure I had enough memory. I ended up not even using one 256 meg card. Not thinking straight. Nagging back pain and pain killers. Shyt. Should have just stayed home.

it is a shame, but when this happens, you learn alot and I am sure that you wont go another event with out checking the settings again.

as for shooting raw, I am not a fan of this method, manly because it makes a photograher lazy. but that is just my view.

If you haven't already, when you drop a piece of camea equipment you will again learn another leason. Been there done that. now each time I go out I check my settings, I check the previews, and then I check the settings again.

all learns learned

Whaaat  Thats the first time I heard that argument against RAW.

RAW require more work than JPG, I don't see how that makes people lazy?

That sucks.... Is it at all possible to salvage whitebalance mistakes in JPG?

The colours are not hard to correct with for example Photoshop - use the white, gray and black eye dropper tools in the Levels or Curves dialogs.

RAW makes a photographer lazy? You mean because you don't have to think about settings such as white balance, contrast, sharpness etc.? Post processing RAW images is more work than setting up the camera and shooting JPEG - so the work is just done at a different moment. I'm a big fan of RAW - if you want to get most out of your camera, you're only going to get it with RAW.

I would also think that since it is possiible to correct daylight film to use it indores and visa versa that there would be a photoshop filter available some place to do the same thing.

I am able to correct the colour but the blown out whites are just that. Blown out. Irrecoverable because loss of detail. Not all photos all photos are lost as not all the dogs have white.

In PSCS, they're here:

Depending on how important they are you might want to check this link out. They have a full set of digital fiters for a wide range of applications.

Color casts are easier to correct in RAW but it's still correctable even when shot in JPG. However, blown highlights are blown, even with RAW although you do get a little bit of latitude with the RAW wherein you can recover details if it's not blown too much.

This is why I check the histogram a lot, especially when shooting with a flash. BTW, underexposure can also be a problem, so I check for that as well.
