Hi, i do a lot of nightclub photography, and have been happy with my G3 and EX420 flash for over a year. Has anyone used the Pro1 for nightclub photography (with external flash) and can they please post some examples?
i want to know if the upgrade will be worth it.
thanks in advance.

Andrew,

for nightclub photography you might also take a look at the Digital Rebel or the 20D with a fast lens (e.g. Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI and Canon 50/1.8)

Those cameras should perform be a lot better with their very good and practically noiseless pictures at high ISO settings.

Best regards,
Andy

I do a bit of nightclub photography and uses 300D (digital Rebel I believe its called in the states) + 540ez (on manual) + 20-35mm 2.8-3.5 Tokina lens. I find this set up very flexable and not too big or obtrusive in the clubs. I think it'd be pointless to use too long a focal length in nightclub photography tho,

1. u are always shooting at slowish shutter speed. even at ISO 1600

2. long lens + dancing crowd = broken lens + repair bill.

I mostly shoot at ISO 400 - 800. too much noise at ISO 1600. might not be that bad when shooting normal subject but at nightclub shots, there will be a large area which will be dark on your pic, they will show up very bad noise on 1600 if not careful.

I am swiching to 420ex and looking forward to the next shoot next friday. Will post u results.

"practically noiseless" high ISO - I would dispute that, although the Canons are certainly better than other brands and even 3200ISO is usable, though noisy, as long as you don't under-expose.

the rebel I find the images look flat whereas the 40D there's more depth of field and the colors are more vibrant.

The worst disadvantage of the Pro1 is that it can not autofocus on low light and the manual focus is really difficult to use.

Inexpensive (older) DSLRs are way better than a compact for low light work. I shoot many parties with my 10D and a 580EX plus Canon 20-35 USM. It works marvels, despite the ageing setup.
