So, I'm checking out a bunch of stuff on Alamy to get an idea what kinds of stuff are being submitted, and I notice that there's a great number of people shots that do not have model releases, yet I always hear the "you gotta have a model release" mantra. I'm not talking about random shots of groups of people, but many single-person identifiable shots. What am I missing?

It is up to the purchaser of the photo license to verify if they require a release for what they intend to do with the photo. Photos without a model release can be used for editorial or acedemic use.

In the near future I plan to upload model shots on the reseller that I use too.

I may be wrong but from what I gather is that the release is for you to give to the online seller (in your case Alamy), along with the photos as proof that the model has agreed that his/her images can be used for resell. This will cover you and Alamy if the model should start a legel issue "I didn't give my permission to sell...aahhh~." Also, the release is not going to be attached to the download file. Alamy probably has their own policy and rule blurbs attached to that.

If you don't have a model release to give to Alamy, they most likely will turn down your photos. Does Alamy have a Forum? If so, that issue is most likely covered. I was confused at first too and went to my Forum and got a lot of valuable info from there.
