Yeah drummer's are never easy to shoot.

They were a fan of red lights to which never helps. For some reason they only allowed us to shoot the first two songs rather than 3.

Two songs is hardly enough to get a great variety of captures to choose from... Especially when the lights are constantly changing, and the performers are moving around.

I shoot RAW, and "bracketed" in groups of three exposures, one f stop apart... This gives me a greater chance of capturing satisfactory face and eye, and action shots.

This set has pleasant colors, and your composition and framing is consistently good... It's the little things, like the "mike in the mouth" or the tongue sticking out, or the dark face in the shadows, that takes away from the perfect shots. Too bad they don't let you shoot the entire show.

I'm glad you're helping with your critiques here in this PA forum... The more the merrier... Cheers.

Sometimes "they" only allow 30 seconds of the first song which is when the 'two body' model is very helpful.

Now that makes a lot of sense to me!

I like these images but wish you could post larger.

Rene is probably going to give you hell about the way those reds are blocking up...;)

I'd say you did pretty well for only having 2 songs. I can't imagine 30 seconds...the way I operate, I'd be screwed.

By the way Dave:
It's Dwight's proved and tested method of "bracketing" that I'm referring to... He prefers it, and now so do I... Thanks Dwight... Cheers.

Let me take a crack at it, and interpret this for you Roman... Anyone else, please correct me if I'm wrong...

Model = Representation, or sample...

two body = 2 Camera Bodies

During a two song limit scenario, or even during a 30 second limit, two bodies would be preferred.

I also shot raw. Usually I can judge the lighting pretty well and get the shots I want.

This was a difficult show to shoot as he never really moved away from the mike at all.

I will always help out as we are all learning its not something that stops.

Yes, Rene can sniff out red channel clipping in a post a mile away ... er, ah, I mean kilometer! :-)

Yup, 30 seconds isn't long so I now use two 1DMIII's, Av f/2.8, ISO 1250-2000 depending on stage setup, RAW, three brackets at 1-stop, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS on one body and 300mm f/2.8l IS on the other with 24-70mm f/2.8L ready to swap if necessary. You can capture a lot of frames in 30 seconds and get somewhat of a variety if the LD cooperates. Of course, in this scenario it is critical to be ready to start shooting when the talent walks on the stage and the lights come up.

sorry i dont get what dwight says - "two body model". what that means guys?

Yes, Roman, as John pointed out I was referring to having two bodies with different lenses in hand. As one fills its buffer and can't shoot I switch to the other and then back again.

Dave, yes, all of them at least 800 pixels would be nice. :-)

Oh, goody! :-) I shot Don Rickles last night. He's 82, fading a bit physically but mind is still sharp as a tack ... had us all in belly laughs for well over an hour. Not much to see visually but it was like a massage for the the mind.

Say, Dwight... Don Rickles was a regular act at the resort night club I worked at, (here in the Poconos,) back in the mid 1970's... I must have seen him 5 or 6 times... Looking forward to your set.

Well, of course, Dave was using a couple of nice DSLRs and you, like myself, was making do with a compact and its teeny weeny sensor. And that means in poor lighting conditions accompanied by lots of smoke we have the choice of noisy pics or ones with next to no detail.

Where were you shooting from? We were on the barrier on Jon's side.

I like 2 and 6. It was pretty much impossible for me to see Spencer, never mind get a shot of him.

The red lights were a major pain. I'm sure they had a much better lighting set-up the last time they played at the venue.

Some nice images.
I like #2, 3 (straighten a bit maybe), 5 and 6.

On the reds: LR? ;)
Lower color temp, add a bit of green. And/ or use the HSL slider to desaturate the reds a bit. In PS it's even better correctable.

I was using a Canon S3 Powershot, mini SLR, it's a pretty damn good camera but I had to put the ISO up quite high in order to get enough light, and I was wondering if there's a better way to shoot in dark conditions.

I was near the front at the beginning but all the annoying little 14 year olds started pushing everyone & I started feeling a bit claustraphobic so I moved back quite a bit.

They're a bit crap but here's a couple.

They are a little small to see. Can you make them a bit bigger?

As for getting nice clear shot I was shooting at iso 1600 using a 2.8 aperture lens.

I was also in the pit rather than in the crowd so was able to get different angles.

They are kind of tiny, still your framing seems fine. I've no experience of the Canon S-series, so I don't know how it performs at higher ISOs. When I'm shooting from the crowd I generally use a Fuji Finepix F20 which at ISO 800 usually gives acceptable results (although I wasn't happy with Thursday's pics), but only has a 3x zoom.

My daughter was using a Panasonic Lumix FZ7 (12x zoom) at ISO 200 (because you daren't go any higher!) and she posted a few of those at buzznet.com. But as she's been shooting quite a lot of shows recently from the photo pit with a DSLR she wasn't over happy with the results she got either.

Here's one she took of Trace Cyrus of Metro Station...

The Image posted was pretty good I managed to get a few of metro station but nothing that great.

What other stuff has she been shooting?

Well, obviously she doesn't get to shoot as often as the pros on here do, but since last autumn she's had passes for...
Paramore, From Autumn To Ashes, Madina Lake, Mindless Self Indulgence, Avenged Sevenfold (twice), the Taste Of Chaos Tour (The Used, Rise Against, Aiden, etc), Spitalfield, MXPX and The Audition.

According to the phone call I got from Ticketweb ( I think?) the show is going to be rescheduled. Although I doubt that New Found Glory will still be supporting and unfortunately they were our main reason for wanting to go in the first place.

It is the best venue in Scotland. You get the best sound at gigs there. The pit is a bit jungle gym like but if you want good sound its a lot better than the Carling.

It may well have the best sound, unfortunately having only hearing in one ear (hence my user name), I'm probably not the best judge of that. I think she doesn't like going there because of the lack of crowd control prior to doors and the fact that security don't do much to ensure the folk that have been queuing all day get in before the people who have tacked themselves onto the front only half an hour earlier.

I bet the band hasn't even warmed up by the third song... most of my best shots usually come from the last 3 songs, when the energy has had a chance to build.

Not to hijack the thread, but I would literally wet myself when Rickles was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.....and the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts (which I have the full DVD set! WOO!)

Any shots from the gig you'd care to share, Dwight? *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*
