Have Fun,
Its about time! By their calling it a "Limited Edition", You know there will be a run on them, and I'm sure that was Canons strategy.

I guess this means there will be no replacement for the DRebel in the near future. I would think Canon marketing would want to differentiate any replacement with a black body. Any thoughts on this?

I suspect the next Dreble will be the same camera with a black case and upgraded (un-crippled) firmware with a cost of about $700 with a kit lens. It's gonna be a big hit. No R&D for Canon and it'll introduce a lot of new (lens-buying) DSLR users.
Dunno if this is the plan, but that's what I'd do.

Hmmmm, local really small camera shop has had black Drebs for a couple of weeks now. Guess Canada got them first to make up for the shortage of MK II's

I honestly don't mind the silver version. I'll wait for a 20D or equivalent (at that time) for black.

Nothing really, but all the years I have been in photography (from near birth) black cameras were always a sign of professionalism and quality.
It's always been that way.
Still is.
Nevertheless, the black Drebel will take the exact same photos the silver Drebel takes. And it will still be plastic.

My Dreb is my learning camera. And, if I do decide to further the hobby, even possibly into the professional realm, I plan to buy a new camera by that time.
So, by the time I try to make myself look professional, I will have a professional-looking camera.

Hopefully after all the hoopla dies down, the cost of the silver dRebel goes down anther $100-150.

I really think this is the last hurrah for the first generation Drebel. Two Christmas seasons with the same product in this technology-driven market is a long lifetime. I expect to see an announcement just after Christmas (PMA?) with the successor.
But I could be wrong...

I'm actually holding off buying the 20D until the silver version of it comes out. Actually, the champagne colored would be even better. So, anybody have any news or rumors of when this is going to happen?
Face it. Black is so common place. Practically everybody has one of those.

None when the 10D costs less.............. Companies sometimes make decision that absolutely no sense.

I think they are releasing a black version because sales of the silver one have tanked. I read that the D70 outsells the Dreb, Canon, to stop eroding sales are trying to make a sows ear look like a silk purse. People will buy more because the black one looks coolers and more pro, just like the D70.

If Canon marketing cared about color, then all the "L" glass would be black...

But then how would they be able to make ads that show the "dominance" of their lenses at sports/professional events. Isn't their marketing to purposely make their pro lenses white so we can make out a difference from Nikon lenses? 8)

damn.. I'm actually a bit pissed i purchased mine before this.. try shooting pee-wee football with a silver/plastic camera vs. a pro-looking black camera and see who gets less crap from the parents thinking you're some wierdo.. black really does make a difference. :x

Yes the white is definately a distinguishing characteristic, but it also is to keep the lens cooler. The white body reflects more heat rather than absorbing it.

I actually got to see one here in Houston, at a local camera store. They had it dispayed right next to the silver one. For a spit second, I thought about asking them how much would it cost me if I traded in mine......but then reality kicked in, and I would rather wait until I can afford a 20D. I have to admit, it looked much better in black!

I just got my 20D (fantastic camera!) after having the Rebel for about half a year. And you know what? I kind of miss the silver. The Black is kinda blase' IMHO. Of course holding the 20D is a revelation, but only because of the non-plastic body, and the rubbery grip, and the Quick Control Dial, startup times, instant response, etc... compared to the 300D.
But there was something about that little silver body -- I got more attention from bystanders (I work in the CNN building in Hollywood, and when I'd have my camera out with the 70-200 people would stare). With the 20D, it's just another black camera.... ;)
Which incidentally, I prefer in terms of being stealthy with a non-telephoto lens ;)
I had a blast with my 300D though, and I have it as a backup. It served me well.

Don't be suprised if the black version turns out to be incompatible with the hacked firmware.

Wildman: what would be the need for new firmware on the Drebel? The version they have in it has been out for a long time now with no obvious problems by users. Companies don't spend money putting new features into software that aren't needed. The less firmware versions a product has the more profitable is it for them. Unless they make new firmware to be sold as upgrades to users.

I purchased my G2 near the end of it's life cycle two year ago and within weeks they introducted the "limited Edition" Black G2. This looks like a trend to me, so I expect to see an updated Rebel before two long. (Feb-march?)
It seems logical to me that a new Rebel II would be de-featured D20 in a similar plastic shell. Probably Silver as well.
