as I was able to rest the 40D on a bench I thought i'd try the live view x5 to focus on the eyes. not great lighting but nailed the focus ok:

Excellent focus - did you get the delay because of the pre-flash mirror up down thing ?

yes - it feels like shooting with a P&S's shutter lag.
