Soon, I will buy the Canon 100-400L, and would like to purchase a good tripod for it. I travel a lot, so it should be light and small. I was looking at the Gitzo tripod, and like the GT2540EX (I like macro), but it support lenses until 300mm.... Too bad!!!

For a light lens such as your 100-400L, the GT2530 or GT2540 will work well if you are not shooting in windy conditions. My GT2530 works well with my EF 400 f/5.6 L. I hesitate to recommend the Explorer series because it does have more joints that can add up to more vibration.

the 2540 would work fine but i don't really consider it lightweight :D.

I suppose you could get a Gitzo "1" series at 1Kg but you would really be stretching its limits. For travel, a "1" series would be nice but I'd not travel often enough to justify its purchase and I know that a "1'" series would be too light for a 100-400L zoom.
For a trip to Japan next year, I figure I'll put my GT2530 in my checked luggage with its BH removed. It certainly will not fit in a carry-on.

what do you plan to shoot with the 100-400L .... why do you need to use it on a tripod instead of handheld or on a monopod?
if you need rock steady support for a 3 lb. lens plus camera the 2540 + ballhead may be "lightweight".

That is very light ... easy for travel and about the same as my Manfrotto 190 MF3 which was bought for that same purpose. Steady, easy to use, and just does the job without fuss. Holds the 100-400 no problem and comes with a nice carry handle. What ballhead ya gonna use? The Markins M10 is nice and light.

i love my 1 series Gtizo tripod for travel, i will use it all the time i travel, it is so light and i don't use 70-200 or 100-400 that much when i travel [not yet], so with my 5d or 1-series bodies and from 16-35 up to 24-70 this tripod can handle them great, and just i will get a ballhead to complement it.
but here in my country i use 190XPROB with that 804RC2 attached head good enough for my hiking, but really i love my new 5540 tripod but no head yet to use it.
both are are light to me [to my surprise Gitzo 5 series is light little heavy when folded but so light when full open].

I would suggest that you checkout Feisol to see if they have what you are looking for.

I have the CT-3441S which is their travel tripod and use it with a RRS BH-25 ball head.

I think I 'm gonna order the GT2540. I will use my 100-400 L to shoot wildlife animal during my trip in Africa, so I need a tripod. I want to use it for macro pictures as well, so I will choose the Explorer. I don't really know about the ball head, yet.... I'm working on it. Some advices???

Kirk, Markins or Really Right Stuff are about the best.
