I am trying to transfer all my data from my old Mac 10.3 to my new one running Leopard..
Migration assistant does work with 10.3...
So i have downloaded Carbon Copy cloner attache dexternal hard drive and am abot to tun CCC..
I have been advised to enable bootable disk option...Where do i find this and is it for the new machine or the old one??

It is essential that the external drive is freshly formatted for making a bootable disk copy. Format it as an HFS+ with Journaling enabled using Disk Utility (found in the Applications/Utilities folder).

In Carbon Copy Cloner, click on the Preferences button and set both Repair Permissions and Make Bootable as in the attached image. Chose your old computer as the source disk and your external drive as the destination disk. Click on the padlock and enter your OS X password, then click the Clone button. Go have a few beers, because it can take a while.

Is there any reason you don't just boot into target mode (hold down the "t" key during boot) after you connect a firewire cable to the two computers and copy everything you want over?

I tried that option but as instructed by Apple care Leopard and 10.3 just wont work ..
Leopard just wont recognise it....
I need to get 1600 Itunes and 5000 Jepgs from Iphoto over and am not looking forward to burning that many disks....
Any assistance would be welcomed...

I'm not sure why CCC did not copy these over to the external drive. They should have made it over.

You should be able to copy your iPhoto library over by drag and drop (I'd suggest putting it into your home/Pictures folder.

The move of your iTunes library will be more problematic. It uses XML and a backup and you can lose lots of information that you might have added. See this Apple doc for suggestions on getting it moved over to your new Mac:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748

If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to do a work around.

His old mac is pre-target mode, thus the rom won't recognize the 'T' on startup.

Sorry about not getting back. I'm remodeling our bathroom this weekend and have been cutting and hanging backer board all day...

1. Do you have your iPhoto library copied over to your external hard drive? If so, you should be able to plug that drive into your new Mac, then launch iPhoto and choose File -> Import To Library... Navigate to the external drive and select the library folder.

2. Did you get your iTunes problem resolved?

Thanks Tony and i hope your bathroom reno is going well...Good to see some one doing their bit to prop the economy up...

In short i started selecting and dragging photos into my ext drive but old mac struggles very slow and every now and then i get an error message saying that one i of the Jpegs is in use and when i press ok the hole selection is cancled and then have to narrow it down to which Jpeg to avoid cancelation of the other 300 or so moving across...

I have put it to a Mac forum to find out about Itunes but i think i will need an Ipod to make this happen...Its a pitty there isn't a programme like CCP for selected items or folders...

It is strange that my libraries did not make it over with CCP ....

I am waiting for someone to come up with an Itunes fix it seems to be a tuffy as no one has answered yet.....

I am just thinking of getting myself an Ipod to solve it...

Getting an iPod won't solve the problem. An iPod is a destination only for your music and video files. You cannot copy from an iPod to a computer (unless you use your iPod as a hard drive).

Does your current iPod library have any videos on it that were NOT bought from iTunes Music Store? If not, you have no worries about losing any tags that cannot be easily recovered. All you should have to do is drag your Music folder over to the external hard drive, then connect that drive to your new Mac. Once it's mounted, drag the contents (i.e., Select All) Music folder into your home Music folder. Once copied, just drag your Music folder icon and drop it onto the iTunes icon in your Dock. iTunes will add everything to its library.
