You knew it was coming... If all of these DIY projects work Ill put together a thread about the 'poor mans studio'
So Im thinking... tell me if im crazy, but two black umbrellas with the inside spokes removed and lined with aluminum foil. Then rig those on an old microphone stand and mounting my sunpaks on those as slave flashes. Is this possible to work or has it already been done before?

Have you seen how cheap you can buy umbrellas for? Umbrellas can be bought for under $15. I appreciate DIY projects but I don't see the advantage here.

I was going to get an umbrella for £1 and then spray it silver but then realised the paint would cost me the same. Umbrella I would just buy as is.
Items like softboxes, I am happy to experiment with. Those are DIY items worth playing about with.

Agreed, I'd just buy one. This seems like more work than its worth for something you probably will actually end up paying more for.

I can't vouch for the quality of these as I've never used any of them. The white umbrellas are less expensive than silver. If you want a nicer quality silver umbrella, you'll likely have to spend a little more money ($20 - $30).
