Yes I have one and you can buy it from me if you'd like. Even though it does work, it is way too slow for much out in the field use. Something like usb 1.0 ish speeds. Near 30mins to off load a 1 gig card! Crazy since it is supposed to be firewire transfer. Plus, it must take more battery than normal use, I was only able to make 2 transfers before the battery in the iPod was dead rendering the idea useless. I'm bringing the laptop and a spare 2gig card next time.

I heared It is very slow. But I can just leave it over night, thats no worry. How much are you looking for it?

The Belkin card reader for the iPod works fine. Very slow but reliable.
Just make sure you will be able to recharge your iPod frequently.

I have one of these (http://www.dukebox.com/player/archos-gmini220) and it is the greatest little unit. It downloads a 512 CF card in 4-6 min.

You can also get a DC charger for it that works off your vehicles cigarette lighter which is real handy when camping.

Highly recommended.

Could you visit an internet cafe, get a standard card reader (or use one of theirs), and write the data to CD? Might take an hour or so, but it'd be cheap.

I have an Archos 480, which is nice because it replaced my iPod and allows me to watch TV while travelling as well. I also keep a mini portfolio on there to show people.

another vote here for the Archos GMini 220.

- 20 Gigs
- CF reader/writer
- MP3 player/
- audio recorder

all in a package that's smaller than an ipod and about $250.

it has a permanent place in my camera bag.

I had one, gave mine away, because it was too slow and would eat up the ipod batter. I could only transfer 1 or 2 2gig CF cards on a charge.

There are alot of hard disk alternatives that give you a better bang for the buck.

I use the SmartDisk FlashTrax

a bit expensive but has a color display.

Many others just transfer data with minimal screen and a much cheaper.

I believe that the cheapest options is to get one of the original X-Drives. I use one with 20GB HDD and it has worked for me just fine for the last two years.

Transferring the images to the PC is a bit slow because of the old USB1.1 interface, but I can live with that.

When I went on a trip I brought along a PAIR of X-drives... I was scared to put all 2,700 RAW files on one hard drive.. so I copied each card to both X-drives.

On the flight home.. one X-drive was in my luggage,. and one was in my cargo shorts pocket!

The 20gb X-drive "original" availbale at Radio Shack is dirt cheap and the slow USB-1 speed makes no diffference in the feild.. it just means when you get home you have to wait longer to get it on your PC.

You'd be looking for the "io-magic" unit at Radio shack.. I think it was about $120.00 if I remember correctly.

Most Radio Shacks will only carry one at a time FYI...

I 've also got a 20gig x-drive which I've had for a fair bit, and have been pleased with it, yes it is a bit slow at down loading the photos with the usb but as been said you can live with it, transfers from the card to the unit are ok. If I was getting one now I would proberly go for something like the phototrainer which has a screen, at least you can see that they have down ok, before deleting from the card to start again!

Edsarkiss/Wolf,

The Gmini 220 looks tops. Does it download RAW format files OK? and can you view them on it?

Mark.
