While on vacation I was in a laaaarge mall doing a little shopping when I happened upon a photo studio that had a couple of hotties behind the counter. There were lots of enlargements on display and that got me thinking of what gear they used, so I asked one of the girls and she took me back and showed me the studio and camera that they used. There were a couple of big umbrella light stands and backdrops, but the thing that amazed me was the camera and lens that they used. It was an Oly E500 w/18-200 lens. No 1D cams to be found or L lenses for that matter. It really is all about the light isn't it?

For a 30x40 they charge $400-500.

I think Olympus marketed a 'portrait package' very aggressively - you get a camera, lens, some lights, a printer, and if I remember rightly, a DVD to tell you everything you need to know.

It is entirely possible to turn out high quality work without a 1 series camera and an L series lens. I know one person that shoots with an Oly and his work is very good. Good lighting can make or break a portrait. It sounds like they know how to use their gear.

Fwiw, their prints were sent out for lab-chemical processing.
