Hi all -

I've had my G3 for what seems like years (almost 2 i guess) and I am only now learning how to utilize the advanced features. I've read about turning off the on-board flash when taking pictures indoors and adjusting the shutter speed and aperture to take advantage of the ambient lighting, but when I do I am often ending up with blurry images.

I am assuming this is due to the fact that i'm using slower shutter speeds and not using a tripod, but even when i use a tripod, the slightest moves by my subjects result in a blurry picture. Even then, I cannot increase the shutter speed because I cannot get enough light in. (did i just confuse the heck out of you because i think i confused myself)

Will getting a mounted flash fix my problem? and will it allow me to take pics without a tripod?

If it is the best thing to do, can I survive with a 220ex or should I go with a 420ex?

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

It sounds to me like you are on the right path. A good tripod will make all the difference in the world. Try setting the timer and step away from the camera as in counts down so that their is no movement as the shutter fires. This should help or you can use the remote to trip the shutter. The 420 flash is a great flash and one of the best features is the moveable head unit. If you shoot indoors, one can really light up the room by tilting the head up or bouncing off a side wall or a combination of the two. If you can, this will be a great investment even if you choose to upgrade to a SLR digital. I hope that this helps shed some (flash) light on the subject.

FWIW, I get by with a 220EX on the G3. If at a party I have C1 set for hyperfocal but will sometimes switch to TV @ 1/125 or > if things get blurry. Then again, maybe the tequila makes things blurry. :D

Oh I did buy a universal omni-bounce. It isn't made for the 220EX but can be modified to work. It really helps reduce glare (better than setting the EV to -2) and helps reduce shadows.

Checked to be sure and this is what I bought for my 220EX
