View Full Version : 20D power switch -- why 2 on positions?

I am curious as to why there are two ON positions on the power switch on the 20D.

To use the dial to adjust exposure one has to set the on-switch to the top setting (the one with the line pointing to the dial). Since that's the case, why would I ever want to switch it to just the first on position (the one that doesn't allow me to use the dial for exposure adjustment)?

If I don't turn it on to the top position (the one to use the dial for exposure control), how can I adjust the exposure to get just what I want (I know I can play in the Tv or Av or M modes, but I mean in the P or the fully automatic or the A-Dep mode?

Just curious -- I've only had the camera for just under two weeks and am amazed at what I don't remember from one day to the next.

I am experimenting with the C.Fn#4 settings to see if I like using the * button for focus lock.

Thanks.

There are two switches on the 10D, but the result is the same...

There have been several occasions that I've accidently changed the exposure comp by rotating the QCD and haven't noticed it.

Being able to shut it off prevents this.

The 1-series cameras typically require pressing a button and roatating the dial, or some other two-handed method to change something. This is by design because Canon reasons that professionals need to know that the settings haven't changed from what they set. Canon makes it so the camera settings aren't easy to accidently change.

Nothwithstanding, I always leave it on and I double check the exposure comp in the viewfinder. Shutting it off means it's off even when I want to change the ISO or WB.

The On position makes it so the rotating dial is not in Quick mode, or in a mode where it can change settings. the ___ mode puts the dial in Quick mode, ie. if you're in M mode, the top dial changes Shutter, the bottom one changes Aperture. Stuff like that.

It's doesn't have an "on" position for the "focus-beep" option like the Mark II, does it?

No, but you can turn that off in the menus.
