Hi everyone, I am a new photographer and just got into it and cant get out!! I love it. Anyway I want to know how you guys make it so that the light is exposed and it is not a clear picture, such as this one:http://www.craphound.com/images/sparklerart.jpg

Where a kid put a firecracker around him. I have a Canon Powershot S5 IS and I want to know step by step how to keep the shutters open because you cant hold them open! Anyway step by step please for my camera!

You ideally need a tripod or other solid support and a remote release to do this kind of shot. I am not familiar with your camera but can give you some ideas. You need a very dark place. Look up bulb settings in your manual. Open the shutter for long enough to do what you wish to with "light painting". Close the shutter. Experiment with your aperture and ISO until you are happy with the result.....

No, Poloman isn't telling you to open the shutter physically with your hands lol. You go under settings and look for "Bulb", which is the mode where you basically hold down the shutter (button) for as long as you would like, and the shutter stays open. Then when your finished, you just let go of the button and the shutter closes, and your picture is done.

Take a look at the dial on the top of your camera. It has Auto, TV, AV and "M". "M" is manual mode where you can "electronically" set the shutter speed (how long it stays open). Check your manual on using "M" (manual) mode and how to set the shutter speed to as along as you like.

You then set it to something like 30 seconds, press the button and rush up to your subject with a sparkler and trace around them before the shutter closes.

I just played with this last night...

Just posted a bunch of pictures here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=471034)

I had it on manual, ISO 400 and 1600 (400 was the picture where I wrote my name where you can see me the rest were 1600) f/5.6, and I played with the shutter speeds depending on how much time I needed to write/draw..

It is a ton of fun!

Where a kid put a firecracker around him. !Wubblelvr,
First you shouldn't post the photo unless you took it, provide a link to the photo instead.

Second don't use a firecracker! as it might hurt  A sparkler should work better.

Third a long exposure is needed, either by having very low light with very small aperture and/or using ND filters to restrict light entering the camera.

And of course a tripod :)
