when shooting indoors with my g3 what white balance setting should I use if I am using a 420 flash? flash or automatic or flouresent white balance setting since the place has flouresent lights that I will be shooting in.

Best advice would maybe be to shoot in RAW mode ... then you could change the WB afterwards.

Shooting indoors with flash can be tricky ... the flash illuminates the subject (so flash would be ok), but the back is illuminated by Tungsten, halogen or other lights ... one of the two will most likely be off.

Best regards,
Andy

You should use "daylight" (or sunny) WB, because that's the color of the light coming out of your flash. Most cameras will automatically change the WB for you when you turn on the flash (not sure about external flashes, though).

The G5 has a white balance setting for "Flash". Not sure if G3 has it also.

yes my g3 has a flash setting for white balance so would this be the best choice for using an external 420 flash. I do not want to shoot in raw. jpegs are what I need to use. any and all help would be helpful.

i would experiment some with the different wb settings for use with your external flash. heck, the worst thing that could happen is you end up with some bad shots that are easily deleted from your cf card.

i did find that the wb setting for flash worked fairly well with my g5.

now go shoot some pics and enjoy your camera.

I agree this is the only way to shoot.
