Try spot metering off the sky, that should prevent them from being blown out like in the first few.

Go into manual mode. Change your metering (the [o] looking button) mode to spot metering or partial metering if you don't have spot metering. Aim the center focus point into the sky and meter off that, getting the exposure correct, then recompose (without changing the exposure, even though the camera will say it is slightly off) and shoot the scene.

I'm sorry but I don't see anything compelling about those images.

The fifth picture is better because the sun is coming from behind you. If you had waited to take the first four pictures until you were in a postion with the sun behind you, they might have been better.

You need to up the shutter speed to stop the movement plus your focus is very soft on 1 to 4.

They are framed nicely, but like others said. The sky is blown and they seem OOF.

thanks for the C&C's everyone...
this is the first time taking shots with sports...
not sure why they are a bit OOF... I'll have to check on that.
next time I go... I'll be sure to speed up my shutter and spot meter the sky... hopefully I'll have better pics.
Thanks again

Ditto. The time of day looks to be to harsh for these photos. You could maybe salvage them using curves in PS.

It could be mild motion blur, but they all look pretty soft. You might try upping the ISO to acheive a faster shutter. For instance, #2 and #3 in particular, appear to have BG in-focus, subject OOF.

Yes. Use ETTL if you can

keep your left arm straight and weaken the grip.
Less weight slide and the shots should be straighter.

ETTL is helpful, but not required. I shoot manual now and with one or two sample shots I can dial in exposure pretty accurately. Set exposure for the sky and then fill sufficiently with ETTL or manual power on your flash to light your subject. It will have the added benefit of stopping action in certain conditions.

They look like snapshots to me. You may want to wait until after they hit the ball so you can see their faces better.
