I have been wondering how Canon adjusts the autofocus on its DSLRs and I found a website where someone had dissasembled their Digital Rebel and modified it, replacing the IR filter in front of the sensor to increase sensitivity in the lower red region. In the process they mentioned that there was a allen head type screw in the shutter compartment that is turned to change the autofocus point. They had crafted a sort of right angled allen wrench to do this, and successfully adjusted the autofocus point. If you set a camera to bulb and open the shutter, you can see this screw. It portrudes from the right hand side of the shutter compartment, between the shutter and the sensor. (Right-hand side as you are looking into the front of the camera.) I checked my D60 and it has that same screw. Haven't checked the 20D yet but I expect it will have it also.

My point is that if you are thinking of sending a camera back to have its autofocus adjusted, it doesn't seem to require that the camera be torn down to adjust. It can be reached through the front of the camera without dissasembly. Thus the risk of any additional problems being introduced by Canon should be minimal. I have been thinking about sending my 20D in even though its focus is in the acceptable DOF range, to try and get it more in the center of that range.

If you spend the dollars on L glass, it seems a shame not to try and have that lens focused to reach its max resolution. If focus is even only slightly off, you then have the functional equivalent of a non-L lens in terms of image quality.

Has anyone had any discussions with Canon that might verify that adjusting autofocus can be done without dissasembling the camera?
