I have an XSi on pre-order. I currently own a Kodak P850. My wife is a little upset because she doesn't want to learn to use a dslr. She thinks I'm selling my kodak to get a lens. I plan on buying her a compact to keep in her purse. I need a recommendation for a compact with a $200 budget. Just want to get the most bang for my buck. Thanks in advance for your advice.

How compact? A570/590 would be nice. I think they're under $200. I think the SDs are all over $200, but if there is one under $200, and she wants really small, they'll do nicely.

Ummmm I think the Canon Powershot SD1000 is under $200
It's pretty good too.

I went through the same thing last week and ended up getting the A720IS. It's a great size, has 6x optical zoom, 8mp, IS, great IQ plus manual controls. So she can use it in Auto and you can use it in manual. Plus it's $172 from B&H. I spent a LOT of time researching and decided this was really the best option for under $200. The only negatives were the slower flash recycle (which isn't a big deal because I'll use it mostly without flash outside) and the lower res screen (which again, isn't a big deal - it's just a snapshot camera after all!) Good luck!

Well, I got the SD750 at Costco tonight. My wife didn't know it was coming. She thought I sold my old camera to get a lens. She doesn't need nor want any extra features. This thing is actually pretty cool. She likes the color picker and the huge screen. All in all a nice camera for well under $200. For once I'm the good guy!!!

I used to have that camera...It sure is lightning fast and captures the moment quickly.
I gave it to my sis when I got my 350D.
