I'm completely new to studio lighting and I am researching to see what to buy. I know that a light meter would be helpful, but if is it possible for it (say Sekonic L-758 ) to fire lights with built in radio receivers that are not PW brand? If not, how do you get the lights to fire to test the stobes? Any help?

I have a Minolta Autometer V F, and PW Ultrazaps. When metering before a session, I use cord from light to meter, get readings, then continue using radio trigger on camera for session. Hope this helps..

Without PocketWizards, you have two options:
1) Plug the sync cord into the meter
2) Use the meter in cordless flash mode, and trigger the lights another way (camera, test button, whatever).
