Hi
I am looking for some advice please.
I want to know how to connect my 5D to my laptop so that when I take photographs they show up on my laptop immediately.
Do you need special leads and / or a particular program on the laptop to enable this.
I would be grateful for any help.
Thank you.

EOS Utilities which came with your 5D includes Remote Shooting. Connect your camera to your computer via the USB cable (that also came with it), and launch EOS Utilities. Full directions are in the Software manual (that came with the camera).

I'll echo what Jon said, but you would probably do better to download the latest Canon software versions (free downloads) from their website rather than use the old stuff that came with the camera.

Thank you for that. I have just dug out the CD that came with the camera and have located the relevant chapter. :)

Thank you for this. Where and what do I look for on the Canon site. I find it really difficult to navigate (it's probably just me as I'm not very good)! I tried to download a copy of the 5D manual from the Canon UK site but ended up having to go the the USA site and downloading it from there it was easier!!! :o

You'll want the EOS Utility Updater for tethered shooting. When you install it, it will ask for your original CD to validate that you have a licence to use it. That will allow you to shoot and download immediately. You'll have to decide which software you want to use to view the files once they have been downloaded. Maybe you will want to also download the latest versions of Zoombrowser, and/or DPP, or use something else. My preference is Lightroom. I have it monitoring the download folder and then it imports and displays each photo as it is downloaded by the EOS Utility software.
Raw Codec 1.2 will allow you to view raw files in Windows Explorer and Photo Gallery.

If you go to the Canon USA site, look up the 5D as you did to d/l the manual and they offer the latest versions of the software on the same page as the 5D manual PDf. However, you'll need to have installed the version from the CD before trying to install the version you download. Canon packages the downloadable versions as updates, not as clean installs.

Thank you both for your input.
I will have a go at this tonight and no doubt post again if I run into problems!!

Hi Guys
I managed to download the up to date software last night, printed out the manual and managed to get my head round it enough to connect my camera to the laptop this morning and Whoooooo Hooooooo.... pics direct to the laptop!!
It will be a lot of trial and error setting the settings as I'm not good at that sort of thing but I am pretty chuffed that I have got this far .... saying that, I couldn't have done it without the input from you two, so thanks again for your time.

A quickie, on topic, I've installed Utilities from the disc included with my mkIII, but it won't recognise my 40D. Separate driver needed from the Canon site, or the disc from the 40D?

The 40D was released several months after the 1D3 and it is quite likely that the software supplied with the 1D3 will not be up to speed for the 40D. Just download the up to date software from Canon's website. That should cover all cameras released so far, inlcuding the 1Ds3 as well - maybe even the 450D/XSi.
