I've seen a few post on screens being replaced on the s3-is, but haven't found anything yet on the s5-is. Would the instructions for the s3 be the same as for the s5? I cracked my screen over the weekend and was wondering if anyone has ever replaced the screen on their s5-is. I didn't know if I needed to replace the entire (rotating) part, or just the screen that i cracked. The display still lights up when i turn the camera on. It just shows no picture since the screen is cracked/shattered.

I bought a replacement screen through the New Jersey Parts Center that supplies Canon genuine replacement parts. The phone number is 732-521-7230 (toll free, 1-866-481-2569). The lcd screen was less than $35.00 including shipping. They do not supply instructions.
The tools you will need are just a small phillips screwdriver(Size-No.0, magnetized) and a small flat screwdriver. You can magnetize a regular screwdriver by rubbing it on a magnet. The screws are very small and can get away from you so work over a light colored pillow case or cloth and under good lighting.
Remove the batteries. Flip out the lcd and remove the two black screws on the end opposite the hinge. Rotate the lcd so you can remove the two black screws on the hinge end. You can now remove the back plastic cover of the lcd.
The electrical ribbon is secured by a holder clip that has to be gently pryed out(2mm)to release the ribbon. Remove the two light colored screws on each end of the lcd holder and the whole lcd assembly will be loose from the pivot bar. The lcd physically clips into the holder. You can gently pry these clips with a flat screwdriver and remove the bad lcd from the holder.
Push the new lcd back into the holder clips and attach the lcd and front cover to the pivot bar with the light colored screw. Reinstall the other light colored screw on the end oppossite the pivot bar. Install the new ribbon into the plug and push the holder clip back in. I had trouble holding the ribbon in place and pushing the holder clip back in at the same time. You might need an assist from a second party to do this. Reattach the back cover with the four black screws and you should be back in business.

I replaced mine on a SD500 and would do it again, not that bad of a job. make sure you insert the ribbon cable completely onto the socket

I dropped and crack LCD on G10. Purchased Lcd from canon in NJ for $40 something. Forgot to order plastic screen that covers it and is separate. Plastic cover was around $10. No one mentioned that. Only problem was I forgot how one of the ribbons came out. Took a few hrs. to conclude I was trying to put it in upside down.
Now I have an S5 with an LCD that lights up but no image. Can I just replace it? Is it common for the backlight to light yet no image?

I ordered s5 LCD from(Canon Parts NJ 732-521-7230)$24 +tax and UPS. Total $32.49. I would add to billsmit's excellent directions. I put the ribbon into the terminal and locked it before I put the LCD back into the holder. Then just flip it over into the holder. When I removed old LCD I had to lightly pry open the 4 clips that secure the LCD in its holder( on top of back light) When I put new LCD in the holder it seemed to not be as snug as old one. I had to lift it out and lightly squeeze the 4 clips that hold it in.Final tips; magnetic Phillips is essential, screws are to small to deal with any other way. Ribbon clip, use a small straight driver to apply pressure on the ends of clip. It seems if you open one end to far the other end may get stuck. so sort of alternate from one side to the other. Take note of how it comes apart and put it back together exactly that way. Especially the order of the screws.
