I've seen a few post on screens being replaced on the s3-is, but haven't found anything yet on the s5-is. Would the instructions for the s3 be the same as for the s5? I cracked my screen over the weekend and was wondering if anyone has ever replaced the screen on their s5-is. I didn't know if I needed to replace the entire (rotating) part, or just the screen that i cracked. The display still lights up when i turn the camera on. It just shows no picture since the screen is cracked/shattered.

I bought a replacement screen through the New Jersey Parts Center that supplies Canon genuine replacement parts. The phone number is 732-521-7230 (toll free, 1-866-481-2569). The lcd screen was less than $35.00 including shipping. They do not supply instructions.

The tools you will need are just a small phillips screwdriver(Size-No.0, magnetized) and a small flat screwdriver. You can magnetize a regular screwdriver by rubbing it on a magnet. The screws are very small and can get away from you so work over a light colored pillow case or cloth and under good lighting.

Remove the batteries. Flip out the lcd and remove the two black screws on the end opposite the hinge. Rotate the lcd so you can remove the two black screws on the hinge end. You can now remove the back plastic cover of the lcd.

The electrical ribbon is secured by a holder clip that has to be gently pryed out(2mm)to release the ribbon. Remove the two light colored screws on each end of the lcd holder and the whole lcd assembly will be loose from the pivot bar. The lcd physically clips into the holder. You can gently pry these clips with a flat screwdriver and remove the bad lcd from the holder.

Push the new lcd back into the holder clips and attach the lcd and front cover to the pivot bar with the light colored screw. Reinstall the other light colored screw on the end oppossite the pivot bar. Install the new ribbon into the plug and push the holder clip back in. I had trouble holding the ribbon in place and pushing the holder clip back in at the same time. You might need an assist from a second party to do this. Reattach the back cover with the four black screws and you should be back in business.

I replaced mine on a SD500 and would do it again, not that bad of a job. make sure you insert the ribbon cable completely onto the socket
