View Full Version : Convinced myself I need a Mac Powerbook G4?

Now please don't laugh but I'm & always have been easily influenced by what I read, see & hear. I see a photo journalist on TV uploading his/her shots to a lovely looking Powerbook, ooo I say, I should have one of those! I read in my monthly photo mag about the equipment that these top snappers use to produce their famous shots, ahhh yes they too have a Powerbook amongst other lovely things. I was in my local photographic shop the other day when I overheard a local press photographer talking about how much he loves his Powerbook over his old PC laptop. Well that was it! it must be fate that I overheard that and plus yes! all those other things hinting at me to go out & spend my money!

So a few days on & I'm about to put my lovely & very good Sony Vaio on eBay & then venture on over to the Apple UK online store to order what's been on my mind the last few weeks, the Powerbook G4 15" model.

I mean I don't really need it, my current laptop does the job perfectly well. It's just this nagging feeling I'm getting that's willing me to go & change.

Will it make me a better photographer, I doubt it! Will I suddenly become a well known photo journalist, probably not! BUT it will show off my work a bit better, that wide screen sure does look pretty! No more viruses, no more blue screens of doom! It's weighs about the same as a mars bar & about half as thick! The main reason though? I bought a backpack in the US & it has a compartment made for a Powerbook 15", mine at the mo doesn't fit so that's enough to sway me folks! Plus I'll look rather cool down my local coffee shop!

My point is I suppose is that at the end of the day you can convince yourself of anything if you really want something! Or even if you don't really need it!!

I'm sure most of us here have done the self convincing thing!?

Regards,

Paul

You will really love your PB. Of course you'll hear some folks that are nay sayers. I've had a PB going back to the Titanium originals and love them. Currently using a 12" PB for travel work....

Enjoy.

I have a 12 inch iBook (the newest version currently out) and love it. The 15 inch PB was what I wanted, but it was way out of my price range so I settled for a iBook, and I love it! (I had come from a world of PCs for my entire life) I'm sure you'll enjoy your PowerBook!

G4? No, don't do it! Get a G5!

Seriously though, I've seen a 17" G4 and it's beautiful. It's huge though so I guess a 15" one would be just fine. :)

Congratulations and welcome to the PB club.

My life has become far less stressful since I got my PB in March.
You will be surprised at how quiet it is, it is a very calm thing altogether.
No more strange alerts and kernel warnings.
If the RAM is ever overloaded (I rarely restart this thing and simply close the lid),
it just takes a bit longer longer to do the job instead of freezing up and loosing
what you've worked on.

15" is a good choice. I have a 17" and find it a little too awkward to
lug around. The size difference to the 15" is insignificant.

I download my pics through a pcmcia card which I got with a printer
a few years ago.

You'll love it.

I bought a car after convicing myself I needed a 2nd one
Its still costing me the equivilant of 300d and some lens every year, but do you think I can find someone to sell it to

Have fun with your new Laptop, I thought about going that way before I upgraded my old comp, but theres some very solid and stable about having something that sits on your desk, and Iv never found a reason to have to portable.

You will love the PB G4.

As a user of both platforms on a daily basis, PB G4 15 in, PB G4 17 in, G5 Dual, + ... and what I fondly call Piece of Crap (PC), mind you the highest spec computer (on paper) is the PC [all with max. ram]. Though to add to that, a MS Word document that the PC just couldn't handle, opened easily on the G5.

While your opening your wallet for the PB G4, add an Airport Express and an iPod :) and always add more ram.

Go for it, you won't have any regrets.

I'm typing on my PB G4 right now, and it terms of colour of display, nothing will beat Apple, also don't forget OSX is Unix based, it's super stable and virus FREE :D

Welcome to the club mate!
