View Full Version : 300D Kit Lens or Not?

I'm about to purchase the Digital Rebel, but am debating whether I should get it with or without the kit 18-55mm lens. Right now, I'm leaning towards NOT getting and getting either one of these two lenses as my primary general lens:

24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000053HHD/qid=1099531803/br=1-17/ref=br_lf_p_17//102-7526476-4515328?v=glance&s=photo&n=493720

28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004YZQ8/qid=1099531803/br=1-14/ref=br_lf_p_14//102-7526476-4515328?v=glance&s=photo&n=493720

Anyone have any comments on either of these lenses? The only downfall I really see is weight compared to the 18-55mm. The price of either of these lenses is reasonable and not an issue.

Any comments, please. Thanks!

The new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 will blow both those lenses out of the water. There are dozens of rave reviews about this $370 lens being comparable to an "L" series. I have the Canon 28-105, it is OK, but not great. I have ordered the Tamron and will be getting rid of the 28-105.

Here are a couple threads about this lens.

Hope this helps.

I just got a 300D, with the kit lens. It's better than my little A70 (suprise suprise), and takes decent enough pictures for me. Where it falls down for me is it can't do narrow depth of field shots, probably it's slow - F3.5-5.6.

I've just ordered the Tamron 28-75 F2.8, which I plan to be my main "walking around" lens. I'll keep the kit lens when I want a wider angle - 18mm on the kit vs 28mm on the Tamron. If I end up using wide angle more, i'll get a proper wide angle lens. I'll also work out if I need more zoom, and if so i'll get the 100-300 IS, or some similar lens.

If you don't need the wide angle, then don't get the lens, get the tamron 28-75 instead. Also check out this store (http://bhphotovideo.com).

If you don't have near-term plans to buy an ultra wide angle lens, I would recommend the kit lens. It is good enough to use until you can buy a replacement, and it is so inexpensive. You can always sell it and get at least half your money back. The difference between 18mm and 24mm is quite noticeable.

By the way, I would also recommend the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 over the other lenses you mention.

The kit lens is great for the cost, it has a nice wide zoom and isn't too bad stopped down to f8-11.
