Hello,
A week or so ago I got two of the 16gb Sandisk extreme III cards. Both work fine, but one of them only seems to have 8 gb of space on it. I've formated the cards on both my cameras, and it will only show 7.8 gigs available. I tried filling the card, and it was full at less then 8 gigs. The other card doesn't have this issue. Its almost like it's a 8 gig card with a 16gb sticker slapped on.
Has anyone else had this issue? I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong before I tell Adorama that the $200 memory card they sent me isn't working correctly.
Thanks

Your cameras don't actually support more then 8 gig cards but heres the work around: http://www.wigglesworld.klebos.com/stuff/diskpart.asp

Thanks. I guess I didn't format one card with the 5D. Thats really annoying that I can't reformat within camera. You'd think they'd make a software upgrade for that!

I think they just released a 5D firmware for that. Check the stickies in the camera forum.

Here is the desc of the update:
The following fixes and improvements have been incorporated:
1. It now supports high-capacity CF cards.
Previously, when using an 8GB CF card or greater (e.g.,12GB, 16GB), even after initializing the card in the camera, the CF card capacity could not correctly be detected.
This phenomenon has been fixed so that the camera will correctly recognize high-capacity CF cards.
2. It allows the latest lens names to be recorded in the Exif information of images taken.
The lens IDs of lenses released after EOS5D are not in the camera; so these lens names could not be recorded in the Exif information of images. The lens IDs for the follwing new lenses are now included, so that the correct lens names will be recorded in the Exif information of images.
-EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM *1)
-EF 50mm f/1.2L USM *1)
-EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM *2)
-EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM *1)
The correct lens names for the lenses above marked *1) will be recorded in the Exif information of images.
The lens marked *2) has been added, if the firmware is version 1.1.0 or later.
3. Lenses that are compatible with the Digital Photo Professional 3.2 lens aberration correction function have been added.
More lenses will be supported by the lens aberration correction function of Digital Photo Professional 3.2, Canon's RAW image viewer/editing software.
Specifically, the four lenses listed in item 2 above have been added. In images taken with these lenses and cameras updated to v1.1.1, the lens aberration correction function can be used.
For other supported lenses, see the user manual for DPP 3.2.

since the 5d isn't a sports camera i always felt that 500 files (8 gig) was plenty. if i still had the 5d i wouldn't bother with the upgrade :D.

Oh yea, my 8GB cards are plenty for me, however one of the other things the update fixes is the EXIF naming of the 16-35 II lens which I own and it bugged me to see all my other lenses nicely and properly names while one of my most expensive had some messed up name in the EXIF of all my pics with that lens. So I was happy for that addition.

what was the messed up name?
Cant remember, Ill have to check when I get home. But it was something just like "16-35mm". Not the usual "EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II" more descriptive name.

I'm using it currently for concert photography, where I have to shoot raw and get as many shots off as I can. And I certainly don't want to change cards in the pit. I've only used 4 gig cards before, so the 8 probobly would have worked, but with the latest sandisk rebate, the 16gig extreme III was under $100. Now how could I refuse that? :D

I have a 4GB Sandisk card with a small three position switch:
Left half 2GB (for FAT 16 SLRs)
Right half 2GB (for FAT 16 SLRs)
4GB (for FAT 32 SLRs)

Not sure if it is applicable to your 16GB card, but the first time I used it I got a 2GB formatted card until I found the switch. Once set to 4GB it worked normally.
Hope this helps

I would still break your work out and use multiple cards. Would really suck if all of a sudden the card craps out and takes your work with you. I've heard horror stories from pro's about it, specially when their card "accidentally" formats itself or goes corrupt. Mostly because of user error, though.

Hope this helpsThat one's an oldie from back when many devices didn't support FAT32 (needed for over 2 GB drives). Now the limits are in camera firmwares; witness the recent upgrades for the 5D and 30D to address the 8 GB barrier.

That one's an oldie from back when many devices didn't support FAT32...
:) I found the first announcement of my 4GB card on Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:40 GMT:
------
Pre-PMA 2004: SanDisk has today introduced the first 4GB CompactFlash card that can be used in any CompactFlash digital camera or device....
The 4GB CompactFlash card has a suggested retail price of $999.99 and is expected to start shipping in April (2004).
------
Do you want to buy my card? :) :)
Now I understand why my Pro1 was shipped with a 64MB CompactFlash card large enough to store SIX RAW images!

Do you mind sharing where you got the 16GB card for $100 after rebate? :)
