View Full Version : Stolen Rebel now replaced - I love my wife!

Well, after my last post stating how I had my entire camera bag lifted from work (D-Rebel, 18-55, 50/1.8, CF Cards, Readers, Battery Grip, Remote), there's been talk between family members to help me get a new camera, especially since my brother's wedding is coming up.

Well, last night my wife and I visited the camera store where I purchased my D-Rebel to just do some window shopping of the 20D. To my surprise they had the 20D body in stock, along with every lens imagineable. They said they were getting ready for Christmas.

Anyhow, my wife seeing the gleam in my eyes after holding the 20D with 70-200 f4L, decided it'd be best to just buy it for me since she knows how much the D-Rebel meant to me.

Now the proud new owner of,

20D
17-40mm f4L (know very little about this piece of glass from reading the forums)
50mm f.18
70-200 f4L - my dream come true lens.

I was a little nervous buying the body only kit, not knowing which lens I would get as a walk around lens. The salesperson strongly recommended the 17-40 f4L after comparing to others in the store. It was more than I wanted to spend, but knew it was probably head and shoulders better than an 18-55 or 17-85. Am I correct in this assumption?

I find the lens to be huge compared to the old 18-55, and quite heavier, although I'm sure I'll get used to it. I guess it's true that the 'L's' do have just that much more quality in them.

Any opinions on the 17-40? Is there perhaps something better I could have bought in the same price range?

I have that lens and am very happy with it. It lives on my camera 80% of the time.

The lens is outstanding. But at 1/7th the price, the kit lens is very good and would have seen you through.

But you have a lens collection that can't be beat.... It would be kinda tough to tear up a collection like that. :-)

You weren't around when I did the same for her engagement ring. I guess there is such a thing as karma.

Seriously though, she is too cool, and loves the photo's I've taken with the D-Rebel. I hope I can continue to get better.

As a side note, the 20D is pretty incredible. I'm very impressed with it. When I fired off 20+ shots in continous mode while sitting the basement, everyone's jaw dropped... and well.. I was sorta.. well.. aroused? is that the right word?

Yes, was very weird. I was saving so hard for the 70-200 as a x-mas present to myself. Then all my stuff gets ripped off, and in turn, I get the lens plus a little extra on the side :D

I've just played some more with the 20D and the features are very nice. I can't wait for a nice day. Lately, nothing but rain.

Lex....Congratulations...the 20D is phenomenal as is the 17-40. Your wife is a doll! My wife is similar and she always wants me to buy the best since we do weddings part time. She wants me to get a Mark II or the new 1DS. We are both lucky to have such understanding wives.....I guess we have "L" wives(think I stole this from Belmondo).
