Hi,
There are a couple of methods for repairing the E18 error:
1) First you can try and remove the batteries from the camera for a few minutes. I don't know why, but that seems to have helped some people.
2) Secondly, you can try using compressed air. You didn't mention anything about your lens getting stuck, but E18 usually happens because the lens can not operate the way it should, very often this is because of the dirt and sand that get into the lens. By using compressed air, you can remove the dirt.
3) Another method is to tap the padded USB cover part on a hard surface, for example, a desk.
4) If your lens is stuck, and none of these solutions work, last solution, whish is least preffered is to try and force the lens back into place. This is recommended only if your camera is out of warranty. If it's not take it to the nearest Canon repair shop. They should repair it for free. In case they offer to repair it, but want to charge you, please contact me, and I'll explain to you in more details how you can repair the error by yourself.
Goodluck!

Hi Aless,
Since Canon refuses to repair your camera for free, my suggestion would be to first try some of the repair methods I listed in the previous post. Majority of people manages to fix the error by using some of those methods.
But, if for some reason none of them works, then I suppose your only solution (only free solution) would be to dismantle the camera and see where the problem is. There are a few online guides for doing this. Some are in English, some not, but they all have a lot of pictures which help with the process. Some of the guides are made for A70 and some for IXUS:
