View Full Version : Recomend Flash for Canon d30

I recently upgraded from my old (but very reliable) AE-1 Program to a Digital D30. To my dismay, I discovered that my old Sunpak generic flash did not work with the new camera. Does anybody know if there is an adapter I could use? It is a very good flash and I would hate to have to spend up to $300 for a dedicated flash.
Alternatively, what would be an *economic* alternative for a decent, tilt-head dedicated flash for the D30?
Thanks!

I assume by economic you mean under 300, so here goes what I know of as far as reliable, excellent flashes for the buck:
Canon 420EX TTL (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=206436&is=USA)
Sigma EF-500 DG ST (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=263435&is=REG)
Sigma EF-500 DG Super (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=263432&is=REG)

Please be aware that D30's, as well as all new canons need 6volts or less trigger voltage. Many flashes use up to 70volts (or even more)..this will fry your shutter contacts. So DON'T use a non-canon flash unless you measure the voltage.

See the Link/answer to your question in the EOS Flash sticky above.

I use the Speedlite 420EX with my D30 and have had excellent results with it! I would say either the 420EX or 550EX would be the way to go. The 420 is a bit cheaper in price so may fit your budget better, but, if you have the cash, go for the 550. Get yourself some good rechargables for it too with a fast reliable charger and ya should be all set. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.......PhotoDude25
