I got my 20d today ($1439) and took about 300 pictures with it and one turned out like this!

Still on the old firmware.

What went wrong?

WTF?? Did my page load completely?? or is that half dog, half blank space??

Whatever it is...........I would probably guess that there's something wrong with your cam.

Update your firmware ASAP!!

Looks like the camera stuffed up whilst writing out the JPEG. Could be card corruption or a software fault in the camera.

Looks to me like you ran the Photoshop CS "average" filter (filter>blur>average) on the lower portion of the image.

If you didn't, then this may be a clue on how Canon's in camera algorithms determine white balance since the info provided by the average pixel color value can be a step towards making color corrections, including adjusting white balance.

Interesting...

BTW -- cute puppy. He/she deserves better. :)

I got similar stuff with rebel when I downloaded it directly.

Get a cardreader. It should elliminate the problem.

If not, then my assumption is incorrect.

I used a SanDisk USB 2.0 card reader.

I will upload the firmware tonight and give it a go tomorrow.

Try to format the card inside the camera before you start any shooting - this may help.

That appears to be the classic example of a corrupted image file where the actual data has gotten scrambled or lost. Now, the question is where in the process it got corrupted. May be the camera, may not be.

I always format the card in the camera before shooting.

This never happened in my 300D, with the same card. Hopefully the firmware will solve the problem.

BTW, Best Buy in Pearland TX, is offering 10% off digital cameras today and tomorrow (sat). New store.

Hi tpinchback,

Is the jpeg still on your 20D, does it look like you above picture on your camera's LCD screen.

Ahhh very good question!!

No, it does not look like that on the lcd screen.

Defect in the card reader or software?

The 'image' looks like a square, and may be something to do with a faulty auto-rotate since you shot it vertically.

I would try to download that jpeg again. Did you use the software that came with your 20 D? Try to download the jpegs to a new directory. Then see if you same thing happens. Let me know what happen.

Definitely do the firmware update. my camera did something similar, in which basically it thought there was more room on the CF card than there was, and it couldn't finish writing the image. Canon said that the first update fixed some CF incompatibilities, although I never used that particular card again (an older Sandisk standard 512)

I'll bet that's what happened with your 20d. My camera also reported that were was quite a few shots left on the card although there wasn't.

Try different ways of downloading it, as in download with EOSviewer, with a card reader, etc. I occasionally get weird files when I try to get them straight from the camera with EOSv but when I go ahead and downlad them off the card reader they have always been fine. It hasn't happened often but seems like it's more likely when I do raw+jpeg, and it's always the jpeg that gets wacky. I think it's the typical microsoft thing, don't worry too much about it. I wonder if anyone using the mac software has seen this?

I've also been from v1.0.2 to v1.0.5 and the only difference I've noticed is that it seems like (maybe) the write speed to the card is a little slower, but I've never had any problems with either firmware version. I have noticed a few oddities with the bundled software in windows but so far have been able to figure out a work-around. It works but is pretty crude.

Looks similar to a problem I had when I first got my D60, which turned out to be a faulty flashcard. Ended up with "half shots" either with blank parts or misplaces parts.

some really drove me nuts - like this one... which would have been pretty good otherwise. :(

http://joebloggs.servebeer.com/odd_files/img_1573s.jpg

sent flashcard back to supplier and they sent me another one and I haven't had any problems since.

I have put about 600 more shots thru the 20D with-out any other occurances.

Updated firmware. But have a few questions.

How do you get the histogram to show up on reply without hitting info?
And which program downloads the pictures from the card reader and rotates the images automaticly?

thanks

joeseph - I got a picture alomst exactly like that one time when I uploaded a map to geocities, it turned out to be an incomplete upload. Not all the data got there but the second try worked fine. I guess IE and some viewers will still show whatever arrives.

tpinchback - the lcd view remembers the last view, if you hit "info" repeatedly it scrolls through 3 (I think) different levels of information, from none to the full info screen with a teenie little thumbnail along with info and histogram. The next shot you take or the next play you do shows up as the last setting.

This happened to me on 2 photos I took in jpeg mode. It happened after a couple of months--but early in my using jpeg mode (up until then I shot only raw). Since then I've taken a couple thousand raw photos and a couple hundred more jpegs and it never happened again. The odd thing for me is that when I look at the image in the canon viewer, I see the whole picture. When I open it in PaintShop pro, I see 2/3rds of the picture...
