View Full Version : 17-40L Lens Hood Question

I'm getting tired of this ridiculous, awkward lens hood that comes with the 17-40L. I have a hard time getting all my gear situated just right in my bag, all due to this lens hood. Do the rubber screw on hoods work just as well? Thanks

Get the EW-83DII, the lens hood for the EF 24/1.4L. It's much easier to handle.

I was interested until I saw the price. $48. Ouch.

But it's an L hood! :P

Better yet -
get the 24-70mm f2,8 - it comes with a hood that also fits 17-40!

The lens hood for the 24-70 2.8L isn't much better. It's flimsy and will pop off if you hit it wrong and if you aren't careful when you twist it on and off, it binds and is hard to twist. I don't have hardly any problems with the lens hoods for my 70-200 2.8L IS and 100-400 4.5/5.6L lenses.

I don't think you want to try the 24-70 f2.8L hood on the 17-40 unless you like vignetting - heavy vignetting.

Have Fun.

Same here. I simply don't use it... or hardly ever anyway. The photos seem to turn out okay. Besides, the hood doesn't look like it covers much. When needed I just use my hand.

Ditto. The hood stays home when I take that lens out.

I also find that I have to take the hood off my 17-40 when I put it in my bag. I've had the same thing with every wide angle lens I've owned so I am used to putting the hood on when I get the lens out.

It does improve photos if light is not coming from behind you.

It also protects the front element of the lens if you happen to contact something with the front of your camera. This has accidentally happened to me often enough that I would not use one of those soft rubber hoods.

"spaceman" should be OK on his 300D with a 24-70L hood though shouldn't he? On a 1.6x crop sensor the 17-40L's field of view is equivalent to that of a @27- 64mm lens. Or have I got that completely wrong?

But the hood for the 24-70 is made for the 70mm AOV - it attaches to the fixed body of the lens, and the front element extends as the lens zooms to 'wide'.

Thanks everyone. Guess I'll give my "hands" a go and see how that works.

I had crafted a custom made hood for the 17-40mm starting with a used 28-70 f2.8L hood.. some moderate use of a saw and dremel tool resulted in a "Perfect hood" for the 17-40mm on a 1.6X crop factor...

Then I got the MkII... and the hood was useless with that... :(

Now I need two hoods for one lens :(

You know the old saying "two hoods is better than one".

Put the hood on backwards, that will give you more room in your bag. I do the same with my 70-200.

I do that too with my other lenses but it doesn't work with the 17-40L. The problem with that hood is that it's wide, not that it's long. So it doesn't add much length to the lens but it makes it very wide.

I'm thinking along the same lines as Cadwell... All else being equal, won't a 24mm hood work fine on a 17mm lens using a 1.6x crop sensor?

I hate this hood. It has never fit well and is in the way. I have had to make this one a keep on the body lens when in my backpack in order to make everything else fit ok.
