I need to pick up some new tripod legs this week to use on location with my rangers. A lot of the time I am on horribly non level terrain, so a lightstand won't work.

Any suggestions? Ideally it would pack down fairly small for airline travel, but somehow i doubt this will fit in my 24" long ranger case anyways.

Does anyone make a center column extension i can get to get a standard 60" or so tripod height another foot or 2 up there?

These will be close but they should fit if you pull out the center column:

This is the replacement for the 3021BPro which was (is) a nice tripod. It goes to 70" with the column extended.

Steve, I am looking at the one model down from that right now, without the horizontal column ability (no need). I forgot you could pull out the center columns on most of them, that will get me another inch or so of clearance. 70" would be a good start.

Is there anyone making extensions? I may have to get one machined I suppose. Another foot of height that i can simple screw on would be great. Ranger heads don't weigh much, so that isn't a concern.

I have been looking for a tripod and came across this: http://www.amvona.com/?page=shop/flypage&view=1&product_id=2620

I'm not sure how much extension you can get out of that center column while it's attached to the legs....

Yes, the center columns come out on both the one I referenced and the next one down. I was pointing to the more expensive one since it had longer legs.

Creating an extension should be pretty straightforward, especially since you don't care if there's some movement.

Bend a piece of strapping at both ends, weld a 1/4x20 nut on ome end and a bolt on the other.

Just an update, got a set of 055XB Manfrotto legs. 70", under 24" long when closed, fits perfectly in the elinchrom ranger case.
