So i've heard a lot about ring flashes for modeling photos. How is the ringflash better for it? Could it be the only light i use to take single person shots for lets say a Tshirt company outside? Any good modeling examples with it to share?

experiences? problems?

thoughts?!

It's not "better," it's just a different effect. Ringflash was originally conceived for macro and medical purposes to light small or close objects without shadows being case over any part of them. Fashion photographers started using them for special effects about 25 years ago, and they've enjoyed a revival over the last six or seven years.

It is a special effect, and like garlic it's not effective for all uses.

check out Flickr.com and search for ABR800 images. That should give you an idea. It can be a nice light, but it's not for everyone. You could get away with a regular strobe or even a speedlight for outdoors stuff.

I have an ABR800 and i love it, I use it for alot of my modeling photos, most times as my only light, with the 56 inch moon unit you can use it off camera and its works just like a regualer ab800 bee light, if you look at my website in my gallery with ALESHA the first pics were taken with the abr8-- off camera as the main light, the ones with the yellow backround were taken with it on camera with the 30 inch moon unit, this light is indispensable , as a ring flash or regular ab800 i would definatly recomend it, so many more uses then a regular ab800 but can be used just like one if need be, takes some getting used to at first but once you get it its easy on easy off, and a million uses, let me know if you have any more questions.

Ah thanks! I do remember that photo too when you posted it. Just what I wanted/needed to see!
