Hi, intend to go for the above lens. As it is on the market since 1999 and some new IS developments have been made I wonder if someone knows something about Canon productdevelopments

I doubt you'll find an answer here. Canon stays pretty tight lipped about their product development until they're ready to issue a press release.

It is one of their best lenses, not sure it is an obvious choice for an upgrade.

I just flipped a very reliable coin, and the results indicate that Canon WILL be producing a new 300mm prime of unknown speed in the near future!*
*note: "the near future" refers to a time within the next 15 years.

Is there something wrong with the current one that I'm not aware of?

+1. What seem to be the problem the current 300IS? I can't find any negative thing about it. :)

It's the sharpest lens they make. Why would they mess around with it?

May be because of IS cost. as new IS mechanism is1 stop more effective at very little cost.

*if* they were to update it, I would imagine the price would be through the roof as with the 200/2 and 800/5.6. I honestly don't know how much better they could make it. The AF speed is blazingly quick, IQ is fantastic. Perhaps another 1-2 stops on the IS, but anything AF or IQ would be a very minimal improvement.
