I'd like to know how many pix everyone has taken with their G-series camera?
I Just got mine....so not many yet.
I own an old Kodak DC 260 1.6MP and took over 3000 with it.

I've had my G3 since September 2003 and I have taken 10,132 pictures with it or about 780 photos a month. 8) I'll probably hit 20,000 by this time next year if I am still using my G3.

Hey Pradeep
You've got some great shots! You should get your own site going to do them and you justice.
I was really impressed with this shot:

Is there a counter which continuously counts the total shots taken and if so how do you view it? I know mine resets each time I remove the CF card.

I'm only up to about 9000 shots with my (now retired) G3.
Is there a counter which continuously counts the total shots taken and if so how do you view it? I know mine resets each time I remove the CF card.
If you set your "file number reset" to OFF, your camera will keep its count of pictures even if you remove the CF card. If you want to know if there is some other master counter that you can use to see the total number of pictures since the camera was made, the answer is "no".

Thanks Sam. The "Serene Rake" photo you referenced above was one of my first "keepers" with my G3. I've always liked that photograph for the way the colors and the angles play, but also because of the way the leaves form characters in the picture. The little leaf edge on the bottom left is like a stage character looking up at some ominous warnings to what will happen to leaves if they are caught. The other two leaves are the killed and skinned versions of the small on the left bottom. Reminds me of how Western farmers sometimes kill coyotes and wolves and leave their skins on the fence post to ward off similar predators that get the idea of coming into their lands to hunt their flocks. If you look at the middle leaf especially, you see the shape of a "pelt" with the legs areas, head area, as you would if you killed an animal and mounted its skin. With the arrangement of the bottom left leaf (which was intentional, BTW), I tried to make it look like how it would look if a leaf was "shocked" upon discovering this horrific site. The shadow angles, which are now coming towards the little leaf that is "alive" impends doom for it as well. 8)
That was the idea I was going for when I took this picture, but few people actually get that, and just like the colors. Oh well. When I told people about the intent of this photo - which was to serve as a warning to all leaves that want to enter my domain, they thought I was nuts, so I then "reinterpreted" it for some and renamed it "Serene Rake", which is what most people tend to see in it. The rake is serene after a hard days work and it has testaments to its efforts strung up on it. That works as well.
Don't you love photography?
I checked out your site. It is creative and inviting. I have been too busy/lazy to put up my own site, but I may in the future. Right now, my little corner of the photo.net world serves me well since I get a large audience for my work and also get plenty of feedback that is both critical and useful. Some of my top photos have gotten over 25,000 viewings, which is more than I would if I had my own little website. Of those viewings, I tend to get at least 40-50 personal emails of people discussing photography with me. Of that 40-50 people viewing my work there and emailing me personally, I make 2-3 friends. I've found using photo.net is better for me to improve my photography.
What do you think? What have been your experiences running your own photo website?

I've had my G6 for about 5 weeks, and I'm up to almost 2700 images.
I have this theory that if I can wear it out before the warranty period expires, Canon are obligated to give me a new G6 and I can do it all over, again. :D

Hehehehe.
Actually, with the cold Canadian winter soon here, the G6 will not be used as much. I don't really feel like taking it out in sub-zero temperatures; I'll take one of my A2 bodies, 28-105mm zoom (or whatever) and some b/w film.
Cheers.

Have you had the need to repair/replace the wonky Command Dial underpinnings? They have a rather short life cycle, it seems........ :(

Bosamar,
I've had my G2 now since January 2003 and shot about 15,000 photos so far.
The only problem I have experienced so far is a number (< 10) of 'hot pixels' that show up especially in long term expositions.
Best regards,
Andy
PS: OK, there's another problem, but it's not the fault of the camera ... I noticed that out of these 15,000, there was a relatively small number of 'keepers' that I am absolutely happy with ... most likely due to lack of talent for photography on my side

That's the beauty of digital - no build-up of negs and slides due to mistakes. :D
I've actually kept a higher percentage of files than I do for film. Maybe I'm now a better photographer? Why didn't they have digital cameras in the early 1980's? :)

Had My G3 exactly one year today, and the counter is at 937, after reseting at 9900 about a month ago, so that makes 10837 shots all up.
I put that number down to two things, first rapid fire (one of the reasons I am shying away from the 300D), the second was the birth of our first wee girl (that has a lot to do with it!)
Now look at a DSLR though to complement , not replace the G3!

I've NEVER had that problem with either of the A2's I've owned. :D
My theory on that(I've seen it happen) is that somebody will inevitably try to spin the dial "BEFORE" they have pushed the button in the center. I also know someone that worked in a camera store and should have known better, do it anyway.
This is one reason that I NEVER loaned those cameras out.
I sternly warned My Daughters Husband about handling the dial when I gave them the standard A2 a couple years ago, and they haven't had any problems with theirs either.
My A2e still functions fine, and sits on a shelf next to my Elan IIe. :D

7916 photos and still counting since December 31 2001.
The camera now sleeps in Hong Kong and has been to Guam, Frankfurt, Paris, Monte Carlo of Monaco, and Nice (S. of France).
It's raring to accompany it's owner to a spetacle tommorow night after some few months of non-usage :D

I've had my G3 since December '02. It has gone through some rough times and places along my vacations, hiking and geocaching and as a result, lens mechanism has broken once (but only once). During that breakdown lens mechanism didn't focus and when camera was turned off, lens mechanism wouldn't retract back into camera. It was fixed (within 24h) by twisting lens mechanism a bit.
I can't give you exact number of pictures that has been taken with it, since during its early days I accidently placed CF card from my older ixus into it and my counter made little jump. However, I can guarantee that I've taken more than 10,000 pictures with it. From that collection, I've labeled 3507 pictures as images that needs to be kept in two separate machines and burned to CD-Rs for offsite backups. While they might not be master pieces, I want to make sure that I won't lose them due to stupid mistakes/accidents.

Woah - does that make me king of the hill?
8464 (yesterday) since purchase March 29, 2004. That makes for more than one thousand images per month. Of course, there were about five trips in there, twice to the US, once to Switzerland, once each to the French Atlantic and French Alps. I have a feeling I'll have rolled the counter over at the latest by then end of the year.
What happens then? Do I start erasing my old files in the /temp directory when I add the new ones? Yikes, better take a look at the manual!

Mine hit IMG_9900, then reset to IMG_0001, however the directory numbers on the CF cards are now in the 200's. BTW now running at 1754+9900=11654! That is in about one year, so the 1000 a month fits me as well!

Should any duplicate files be deleted from the hard drive? (i.e do you overwrite the former files) I would think once I got up to 9999 images, the hard drive would be well-saturated with space and it's time to make room..........
I faithfully put images on CD-R's but like to have them in the PC for quick access.

I sort all my photos into directories named like this:
2004-11-30 Visit to the Beach
That way when I sort them they are sorted by date. I toss anything not worth keeping such as blury ones or only keeping the best out of a run at rapid fire.
I keep all my images on a RAID (Mirror) pair of 120GB drives, so if one fails I don't loose them, then I copy them to a removable 60GB once a month which I keep offsite (at work). A little paranoid, but worth it to protect the images!
Be careful with CDR's, they can fail. I used to copy to two CDR's, and not keep a PC copy (short on disk space), I frequesntly found one of the disks would fail, even if they were stored correctly and were good quality. This is a known issue, not sure if it has been addressed yet. Here is a link on teh topic:

Mutliple and redundant backups on multiple media (good quality CD-R, DVD-R, Hard Disk, Online Archive) in multiple physical locations serves me well.
I use TDK or Verbatim CD-R to do regular backups.
I use Ritek G04 DVD-R to do 6 month backups.
I use a 120GB Samsung HDD to do regular backups.
I keep two copies at home (CDR, DVDR, HDD) and one at my parent's house (CDR, DVDR).
I update the media as new technologies come along.
I did some personal testing by writing a CD-R and DVD-R with the same file (Taco Bell Nutrition Info. Guide) multiple times to fill up these disks. I then set them outside in the hot Georgia sun for 1 month on each side. Basically cooked them and exposed them to all the elements and dirt. Once I brought them in, I cleaned them off with rubbing alcohol and tested them. They both worked fine. If the media I use can handle that, then I don't see them dieing on me that fast. Every 2-3 years, one should update all the media anyways, so there is nothing really to worry about unless you don't follow your own backup plan. 8)

I still listen to my first audio CD I bought in 1988, and it sounds as good, today, as it did back then.
Still, I agree with your methodology that ANYTHING can happen and copies are mandatory of all my CD-R's. I'd hate to see all that time and effort wasted simply because I was *cheap* and tried to scrimp for the sake of a few blank CD's....

CD's seen to last OK, it was something spooky about the CDR's. It didn't matter how well you cared for them, they just died after 6-18 months. I know this happens, I have seen it first hand a number of time (disks in a wallet in my top draw at work in a 24x7 air con building, andway as pradeep pointed out I could have probaly left them outside in the sun, and it wouldn't have made any difference!
On another plan A friend of mine and myself had, now were are in the world of relativly cheap DSL down here in NZ, we were going to copy each others stores over to each other via disk then keep them upto date via DSL. Poor mans replicated datacentres!

Kodak DC280 = 10,000 or so
Kodak DC3400 = 20,000 or so
Canon A95 = 1059
PRO1 = Still waiting for it for Christmas ;)
Yes, I am a picture whore. ;)
And I sort all my images by month, because today alone I took over 400 pictures in a few hours. (Todays can be found by going to my picture gallery, then clicking on page 5 which has the UE [Urban Exploring] thread and then clicking on Centralia 2004) ;)
Then I backup to Sony AIT-2 Tape drive, of which I also mirror all to my laptop and other 3 servers and do a monthly DVD backup.
