I have a Manfrotto 3001 tripod. I would like to get a ball head but do not want to spend over $100. What do you recommend?

Agreed. If you can afford to go over budget by $6 or so, the 488RC2 is going to be the widest-recommended around these parts.

I had a 488rc2, sold it and got a Giotto Mh-1000. A much better ball head.

I'm perfectly satisfied with my Manfrotto 488RC2 for my everyday tripod use.

I also use their 486RC2 on my monopod, but the 488 is much more suitable for the tripod use.
