Hi all. I saw Swiss Toni's lovely Duchess shot and thought I'd post mine of a different steam excursion from the same day (22 Mar 08 ). This was The Southern Sunset, hauled by Clan Line of the Merchant Navy class, as it passed through Fareham. Before you ask, I don't know who John Bellamy was!

It was very frustrating that there was cloud covering the sun up until less than a minute after the train had passed! Still not bad light though, but it made my blue sky saturate to white as I exposed for the darker parts of the image.

And here's a 100% crop, showing that although it seems quite fashionable now to knock the 17-40L, it still delivers impressive sharpness and detail.

Nice. Good idea on #2! It's not one that we ever see here.

That's a nice angle and a good looking loco, I hope "Clan Line" makes it oop north sometime.

She's belching out an impressive cloud! Gotta love steamers.

I specifically chose a spot where she'd be accelerating, and I did a subtle increase of contrast in the smoke too. It was very impressive to watch and hear!

Well thanks for that, very interesting. I must admit I didn't bother looking him up before that. It was a real pleasure to see this preserved loco steam by, so I'm grateful to him and all others involved in doing the necessary work to enable a new generation to enjoy it.
