I know a few people who make a decent fist of shooting motor racing with the 300D/dRebel. Sure it has limitations compared to the 10D or the 20D (not to mention the 1 Series stuff) but they can be worked around. Sometimes it just requires using a different technique.

I had some decent luck with it during pre-season football this year (70-200 f/2.8 )
I think i would have gotten more had i had the tallent i do now, but i'll never go back to it.
The day i knew i needed to upgrade was the day after the night game. Thats where it really became a pain in the butt.

If you go to my site take a look at the practice photos and game 1 photos...those were all taken with a 300D.
If you've got some tallent it can be done. A great camera, i owe it a lot.

This gallery was done with the 300D and a weak-ish pair of lenses (kit lens and the Canon 75-300 USM III)

For my first event with the camera I was happy. Yes the AF and buffer were a pain.
I ended up using a mixture of AF and MF. My sharpest pictures were the ones where I used MF and waited for the cyclists to arrive at a given point. However, I have many, many nice shots with Tv mode and AF doing its thing.
The buffer is small but you learn to work with it... however there is something I've discovered and not seen mentioned. You can (as advertised) fill the buffer then let it empty with the shutter half-depressed (waiting for another shot) *but* if you then fill the buffer a second time it won't empty again unless you release the shutter button. Hope that makes sense... don't fill the buffer twice without releasing the shutter button afterwards.

This picture I took with the Drebel at ISO 1600

I have to say this camera is very frustrating waiting for the buffer to clear while you are missing shots. No AI servo is very bad for shooting sports

I noticed on another thread that you are interested in shooting baseball. This picture was taken with a cr*ppy lens, but the light was pretty decent (overcast sky, mid afternoon). This was all done in shutter piority from behind the backstop.

I've shots sports with the rebel and it works okay. If the sport is too fast for the Rebel's focus, use manual...

My wife and I shoot Little League. We shot with a DRebel and 20D until this Weekend. See here:

I'm actually using it to shoot HS football and I think there is probably more of a problem with the photographer (me) than the camera.
In all seriousness, I think it is a really good camera, maybe not as feature rich as the others, but I think it's been a great place to start.
The only real complaint I have shooting sports with it is with the AI servo mode in manual settings. (I suppose I could use the hack to fix this though.)
Here are a couple of examples, one night, and one day:
