I have been trying to get good macro shots with good DOF. I know taking a picture of a flower is the typical shot, but I am just trying to learn. Is there anything I can improve with this?

I think that I might be inclined to back the camera up a bit and shoot with the zoom to close the distance and not use the macro setting.
That way, you should be able to get the background into more focus at F7.1.
I think that the macro focus limitations are what you are running into here.

Thanks for your input dn7elson
I edited the photo so it is not as large. Does anybody else have any thoughts on this picture? How can I improve shots like these?

Maybe back up a tiny bit and change the angle of the shot. I made the same mistake not long ago and this is what was suggested to me. What I see in your photo is a rose in your face. I would actually like to see the roses beauty.
Examples of the mistake photo of mine and the change in perspective photo-

I'm sure there is much more to see of the rose than what you provided in the photo.
Keep shooting!:)

Colin,
Thanks! I like those pictures. I have been experimenting with my macro lenses and getting depth of focus. I have never been able to blur the background like that. It is all learning for me.

It also seems that you have your aperture cranked way up. Lower it and your shutter speed will increase.
Check out the exif data in my gallery on all my flower photo's.
Remember though, I'm a newbie too and have only been playing around for a couple months.
