I'm debating between insuring my entire apartment or just the camera. I was wondering if you guys had any input. I've read that State Farm is the place to go for just insuring my camera gear, but I'm currently insured through AAA. I just got a quote from AAA and it's only abour $113 a year, so that seems like a pretty good deal. There's a few other things I would like to insure in the apartment as well. (TV, ps3, computer, and so on)
Thanks for all advice!

My leasing company requires that I have renter's insurance. If the camera will be covered by the your renter's insurance even if something happens to it outside the apartment, then I think it will be a really good idea.

I have camera equipment covered through a Personal Articles Policy from State Farm. I have my homeowner's insurance with someone else. From what I've read, it's a good thing to keep them separate since a claim on the State Farm policy won't affect my rates on homeowner's insurance (or vice versa I suppose). Also I probably wouldn't like the $1,000 deductible much if my camera bag got stolen.
With renter's insurance though the deductibles aren't as high generally, and you can switch companies without much hassle. I'd have no problem covering camera stuff with renter's insurance.

Anyone doing professional work with their gear should look into a special policy for their gear, as ordinary renter or homeowner's policy typically has exclusions for professional equipment.

I just talked to the State Farm agent, and it only cost about $19 bucks a year to insure. The big thing is that it also covers in case I drop the camera, which seems like a really good deal. OTH renter's insurence doesn't cover my camera if I dropped it.

I have renter's insurance, but I am about to go talk to State Farm for personal article insurance. My renter's insurance will only cover up to $3000 for computer equipment and $2000 for camera gear. I have 4 laptops and 3 bags of camera gear, so I need to find something else. Sometimes I keep som of my camera gear in the trunk of my car because my auto insurance will cover the loss too.
I have also debated on spending the extra insurance money on a fire-proof gun safe to keep everything in. That would prevent loss for happening rather than trying to replace stuff after it is lost.

A fire proof gun safe won't replace your gear if you get robbed on the street or drop your gear in the river.I have renter's insurance, but I am about to go talk to State Farm for personal article insurance. I have USAA insurance...you do have to have family/yourself in the USA military to get it. My gear is fully insured (look at signature) for about 150 a year.

It was the Personal Articles Policy and covering only about $2300 of camera stuff.
This was from the email from the state farm agent:
Hi Kevin,
The approximate amount for a personal articles policy for your camera annually would be $18.75 this is only for personal use. It is different if you use it professionally. This policy is an all risk policy which means whether its stolen dropped or lost it will be covered. In regards to the renters policy it is covered for theft and all named perils that are included in our renters policy. But not coverage or for dropping. A renter policy for personal property coverage of 25k would cost annually $125.00 to $144.00 depending on your auto insurance. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you

Nice scott...I also have USAA Insurance and I am looking into the insurance for my gear, (not half as much as you have) Is it just a personal articles policy that you have through USAA?

What did you guys include in your policy? Was it just body and glass or was it your full setup?
Thanks
